Uncharted, the big-screen adaptation of the popular video game of the same name, was released in theaters. The film was highly anticipated by fans of the game and, even though critics loved to hate on it, was a box office success.
Since Uncharted’s release, fans have clamored for a sequel, with Sony’s chairman and CEO, Tom Rothman, calling it the start of a franchise. Unfortunately, since then, there hasn’t been any update on the film that would let us know whether it is in the works or not – at least until now.
A few days ago, one of Uncharted’s producers Charles Roven sat for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. During the interview, he was asked if the people involved in the film desired to make another one. He answered in the affirmative, saying:
Oh yeah! We had a really good time with that movie. The fans really liked the movie, and people who didn’t know anything about the game really liked the movie. So we are definitely looking to make another one of those.
Uncharted grossed a little under $410 million at the box office. In a time when films are routinely breaking the $1 billion mark, many might not think that Uncharted’s gross was impressive. But when you consider that the film was released in 2022, at a time when the box office was shaking off the throes of the pandemic, you begin to appreciate its performance more.
Roven was also one of the producers of the Christopher Nolan biopic Oppenheimer, alongside Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas.
Oppenheimer is currently the second top-grossing film at the box office behind Barbie, which it combined with for the fourth-biggest domestic opening in history. The film will also get an extended IMAX 70mm run because audiences won’t stop trooping to watch it in theaters.
During the interview, Roven revealed he pointed Nolan in the direction of the book he would eventually adapt for the biopic.
He said, “Oppenheimer was kind of already on Chris’ brain when I brought up American Prometheus. The book is pretty fascinating, and it’s got its own amazing history. And at the end of our discussion, Chris said, ‘Well, I think I’m gonna read the book.’ And after he read the book, he and Emma called and said, ‘Hey, let’s do this.'”
By the way, some people who watched Tom Cruise’s latest film Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One thought one of its scenes was inspired by the Uncharted 2 video game. The film’s director, Christopher McQuarrie, has since come out to debunk the theory.
Oppenheimer is currently showing in theaters.
