Nintendo Switch 2 aims to eliminate the Joy-Con drift issue

Nintendo Switch's Joy-Con analog sticks have become notorious for drifting days after purchasing the console.

The Nintendo Switch has given us countless hours of joy and, unfortunately, just as many hours of frustration thanks to the infamous Joy-Con drift. Thankfully, it seems like Nintendo might finally be waving goodbye to this pesky issue by introducing Hall Effect joysticks.

Recent patents have surfaced, and if they are to be believed, Nintendo might just be gearing up to tackle the Joy-Con drift issue head-on in its next console iteration, the Nintendo Switch 2. The patent suggests a new design for the Joy-Con analog sticks, which might be Nintendo’s answer to the drift problem that has plagued many gamers’ experiences.

For those unfamiliar with this problem, the Joy-Con drift issue arises from the wear and tear of the potentiometer in the joystick. These little devices use electrical resistance to measure the joystick’s position. As they begin to wear out, they start giving false readings, leading to uninvited drift.

However, the Hall Effect joystick operates on electromagnetism and doesn’t rely on a potentiometer that can wear out. Hall Effect joysticks sound like something out of a sci-fi novel, but they’re actually rooted in 19th-century physics.

Named after Edwin Herbert Hall, these joysticks use magnets and electrical conductors to measure position. The best part? There’s no physical contact between the moving parts, meaning they don’t wear out as easily.

While Hall Effect joysticks have been around for a while (shoutout to Sega’s Dreamcast in 1998), they’re not as common as you’d think. The main reason is that potentiometers are cheaper, and, let’s face it, gaming companies love saving a buck. However, with the rise of drift issues and the demand for longer-lasting controllers, the tides are now turning.

Nintendo’s potential move towards a ‘drift-less future’ is not just a win for the Japanese gaming giant but a victory for gamers worldwide. It’s about time manufacturers took note and realized that while we love a challenge in our games, we don’t want that challenge to be battling with our hardware.

If Nintendo can deliver on half the rumors we’ve heard about the Switch 2, there’s no doubt that it’s going to be among the best-selling Nintendo consoles.

As we await an official announcement from Nintendo, we’ll keep our fingers crossed that all the rumors coming from the Nintendo camp about the upcoming Switch 2 will eventually turn out to be true.
