Back just like he never left, James Cameron never disappoints.

The last time that the world was this hyped for James Cameron’s Avatar movie, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was still nothing more than a figment of the imagination, composed of what were basically high-budget indie films, and Avatar still belonged to 20th Century Fox.

Fast forward to more than a decade later and the world has changed. Disney is the owner of 20th Century Fox and the MCU already has several billion-dollar films under its belt.

Yet, despite all that’s changed, some things remain the same.

Avatar 2 could be the first non-Marvel and non-Disney film hit the $2 billion mark at the global box office in more than a decade.

Just like back then, there’s still fervent demand to watch James Cameron’s upcoming movie in theaters.

Over a month after Avatar topped the global box office in its re-release, Disney dropped a new trailer for the highly anticipated sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, and it’s more than enough to get you hyped.

The first trailer for Avatar 2 was about reminding us of everything that had happened. This one is more of a primer as it gives us a taste of the tale that has taken Cameron nearly 15 years to tell us.

Just like in real life, several years have passed since the events of the first Avatar film. Sam Worthington’s lead character, Jake Sully, is no longer an Avatar. Sully has formed a family with Zoe Saldana’s Neytiri. However, after enjoying relative peace for a long time, they must vacate their homes after old problems re-emerge (i.e, humanity) and Pandora is threatened once again.

To survive, Jake and Neytiri turn to a different tribe of Na’vi, ones who primarily spend their time underwater. This sets the premise for where much of the story will take place and opens audiences up to a side of Pandora we’ve never seen before.

Ultimately, it was silly not to trust James Cameron. The award-winning director might have reservations about his plans for the Avatar franchise but he’s proven himself to be a master at his craft. At the very least, it’d be a huge mistake not to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Avatar: The Way of Water deserves to be watched in IMAX theaters.

Given the success of Avatar’s re-release, we wouldn’t be surprised if Avatar 2 ends up in the same breath as its predecessor as just the sixth film to gross at least $2 billion at the global box office.
