If there's one thing that Illfonic does well, it's take iconic franchises and turn them into passion projects. Admittedly, they're not always perfect, but their previous outings, specifically, Friday the 13th: The Game and Predator: Hunting Grounds, are both excellent 4v1 games.
The former, in particular, delivered on the campy co-op experience that you'd expect from a game based on an indestructible serial killer on the loose. Unfortunately, licensing issues forced Illfonic to shut down the game's servers although the studio continues to support the game as it is still available to play online through peer-to-peer matchmaking.
Now, Illfonic will look to apply that 4v1 magic to Ghostbusters.
Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed appears to be the game that Ernie Hudson teased a while back as it looks to take the crucial part that made the first two Ghostbusters films so iconic - the camaraderie.
The new Ghostbusters game is a 4v1 multiplayer grudge match where up to 4 players can team up and clear out ghosts. In true Illfonic fashion, one human-controlled ghost with a unique suite of powers will haunt the ghost hunters. Although Spirits Unleashed will feature an entirely new set of characters, some familiar faces will return. Case in point, the big green lobby ghost, Slimer, will appear in Spirits Unleashed. Meanwhile, Ernie Hudson and Dan Aykroyd will lend their voices as Winston Zeddemore and Ray Stantz, respectively.
