Lockwood & Co enjoys perfect ratings in Netflix debut

While it didn't debut as the most popular show on Netflix's top 10 list, it eventually landed in third position after Ginny and Georgia season 2 and That '90s Show. It is, however, expected to climb higher given its magnificent critics and audience rating which will likely invite more people to see what it is about.

Lockwood & Co. is a supernatural action-adventure thriller that is adapted from Jonathan Stroud's 2013 book series of the same name. The series consists of eight episodes based on the first two books of the said five-book series. Joe Cornish is the one behind the show as well as its director alongside William McGregor and Catherine Morshead. Cornish is credited as a scriptwriter as well along with Joy Wilkinson, Ed Hime, Jonathan Stroud, and Kara Smith.

Set in a ghost overrun London, Lockwood & Co. follows three teenage ghost hunters – George Karim, Anthony Lockwood, and psychically gifted Lucy Carlyle – who jointly run a psychic detection agency, without adult supervision or financial incentives. Here, the trio set out to solve a major mystery with the potential of changing the entire world.

Ruby Stokes, Cameron Chapman, and Ali Hadji-Heshmati play Carlyle, Lockwood, and Karim respectively. Other cast members are Michael Clarke, Ivanno Jeremiah, Luke Treadway, Morven Christie, Jack Bandeira, Ben Crompton, and Paddy Holland.

During a recent interview with MovieWeb, Cornish described the production team's creative approach to the show's development. He stated that the team had aimed to make the show appear as real as possible. In his words, "I think we all agreed that it needed to be real. That even when it was funny, it had to be the kind of funny that comes when you're scared. And the stakes have to be high. At the end of the day, we had these wonderful books to work from, and Jonathan is so good at evoking mood and detail, and creating these characters, that really, the book was our Bible."

Meanwhile, it is still early days to know whether Lockwood & Co. will join the league of Netflix shows renewed for another season or whether it will face the axe. However, it's certain that it will need more than just ratings to survive. The streaming platform also considers the completion rate alongside the ratings and viewership hours to make the decision.

But, hey, Netflix doesn't cancel successful shows, right?
