Netflix’s Money Heist was a global phenomenon with fans across the globe. One of Netflix’s biggest television series, three of Money Heist’s five seasons rank in the platform’s Top 10 shows of all time. Given its success, Netflix decided to expand the series into a franchise, which includes a South Korean remake that debuted last June, as well as a spinoff titled Berlin based on the show’s character of the same name.
Now, over a year after Netflix announced the spinoff, it has revealed the highly anticipated show will arrive this December via a video posted to its official YouTube channel. The announcement video, which is just under a minute long, shows the lead character studying an incredibly detailed model of a bank with a vault filled with gemstones. However, only one of the stones, a red ruby, catches his attention as he removes it from the pile and takes a few moments to admire it. He then stoops to study a much smaller model of an attractive woman whose identity is unknown.
At the moment, there is little to no information on the forthcoming show. However, it is confirmed that Pedro Alonso will reprise his role as Andres de Fonollosa, nicknamed Berlin, from Money Heist and that it will be a prequel show. The actor, while attending the 2022 Netflix Tudum event with the show’s creator Alex Pina, revealed that the spinoff will “be a trip throughout the golden years of the character [Berlin]. When he was stealing all over Europe, madly in love.”
Apart from Alonso, the new series will also feature Michelle Jenner, Begona Vargas, Julio Pena, Tristan Ulloa, and Joel Sanchez. Pina also takes an active role in this series serving as co-writer alongside David Barrocal, David Oliva, and Esther Martinez Lobato.
While many fans would love for Alvaro Morte, who played Professor in the original series, to feature in some capacity, Netflix has not indicated that it will happen. There is also no information on whether any of the previous cast members – Ursula Corbero, Itziar Ituno, Paco Tous, Alba Flores, Miguel Herran, Jaime Lorente, Esther Acebo, Enrique Arce, Darko Peric, and Roberto Garcia Ruiz – will feature.
Also known as La Casa de Papel, Money Heist originally debuted on the Spanish network Antena 3 in 2017 before Netflix secured the rights. Money Heist ran for five seasons during which it earned both critical and commercial success.
Money Heist chronicled two separate heists coordinated by Sergio Marquina, also known as the Professor, who recruits a team of eight people – Silene Oliveira, Agustin Ramos, Andres de Fonollosa, Agata Jimenez, Anibal Cortes, Mirko Dragic, Radko Dragic, and Daniel Ramos – to execute incredible heists. In the first heist, the team targets a bank and makes away with €984 million, while they rob the Bank of Spain of gold and attempt to secure freedom for a former team member in the second heist.
It’ll be interesting to see if Berlin can replicate the success of Money Heist when it premieres on Netflix. The original show is among Netflix’s most popular originals, with Part 4 and Part 5 racking up 619 million hours and 792.2 million hours within their first 28 days, respectively.
