Blockbuster used to be everywhere - until it wasn't. The advent of streaming, specifically led by Netflix, put it out of business in 2013. Blockbuster once had hundreds of stores all over the U.S. for the better part of the 90s and 2000s. Today, only one store remains operational. Ironically, Netflix greenlit a series inspired by this lone Blockbuster in Bend, Oregon, which premiered earlier this year. Now, Netflix has decided to axe the said show, effectively killing Blockbuster for the second time.
reports that Netflix has canceled the single-camera workplace comedy after just 10 episodes. The series featured an ensemble cast led by Randall Park and Melissa Fumero but this still wasn't enough.
We shouldn't feel surprised that Netflix canceled "Blockbuster". All jokes aside, the streamer has been on a cost-cutting spree lately, putting even popular shows on the chopping block. Thus, Blockbuster, a show that never really cracked the platform's weekly Top 10, was on its way out as soon as it premiered. Maybe, just maybe, Blockbuster stood a chance had Netflix not suffered a significant loss earlier this year. Either way, as a critical dud that failed to land an audience, Blockbuster (the show) will likely not be missed.
