Netflix drops Castlevania: Nocturne trailer ahead of September 28 premiere

Castlevania: Nocturne is the first official spin-off to Netflix's original four-season Castlevania run from 2017 to 2021.

It looks like Castlevania: Nocturne will feature mostly new faces.

Netflix has once again stoked the bloodlust of vampire aficionados worldwide, this time with the release of the trailer for its new spinoff, Castlevania: Nocturne.

The spinoff, which emerges in the wake of the critically acclaimed four-season run of Netflix’s original Castlevania series, is set to make its grand debut on September 28.

Like a bat out of hell, Castlevania: Nocturne swoops in during the tumultuous epoch of the French Revolution in 1792, as it weaves a narrative imbued with blood, political intrigue, and supernatural dread. We pivot from familiar faces like Alucard, Trevor Belmont, and Sypha Belnades, and delve into the story of Richter Belmont, the last scion of the renowned vampire-hunting family and the protagonist of the beloved Castlevania games Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night.

The tantalizing trailer, underscored by a series of striking action sequences produced via the collaboration between Project 51 Productions and Powerhouse Animation, thrusts viewers into the heart of a chilling conspiracy. In the remote region of western France, the desperate aristocracy has entered a foreboding pact with a Vampire Messiah, promising to “eat the sun” and mobilize an army of vampires to quell the revolutionary fervor and enslave humanity.

Fear not, for Richter Belmont is not alone in his fight against these nocturnal nightmares. His cohort includes Annette, a mysterious sorceress from the Caribbean, and Maria Renard, a magic-user and distant relative who’s also embroiled in this terrifying struggle. Together, they are determined to lead the resistance and thwart the looming vampiric threat.

However, Castlevania: Nocturne brings more than just gothic action to the fore; it promises to delve deep into the political underpinnings of the era. Amid the guillotines and unrest, the struggle for power creates a tense backdrop for Richter’s mission. His war against the vampire menace becomes a reflection of the French populace’s fight against their oppressive rulers.

Fans are expecting a lot from Castlevania: Nocturne because of the high bar that the original series set.

Despite the urgency of the narrative, the trailer also offers a haunting glimpse into Richter’s personal journey. His path is traced back to the harrowing death of his mother, herself a vampire hunter, and this fuels his desire for revenge against the vampire aristocracy. Richter, marked by trauma and driven by a sense of duty stemming from his ancestral lineage, is a character destined for both heartbreaking struggles and high-stakes triumphs.

Fans of the original Castlevania series were privy to an array of memorable, high-octane action sequences, and from the looks of the trailer, Castlevania: Nocturne is no different. In typical Powerhouse Animation fashion, the trailer whets our appetite with glimpses of captivating, lightning-fast action sequences, punctuated by sprays of blood and stunning visuals.

Showrunner Kevin Kolde, in collaboration with writer Clive Bradley and animation support from Project 51 Productions and Powerhouse Animation, have built a world that extends the atmospheric storytelling of the original Castlevania series. They have crafted a universe that merges history and fantasy, political strife and supernatural battles, personal loss, and ancestral duty.

Don’t worry, the voice actors of both Alucard and Dracula are confirmed for Castlevania: Nocturne.

This return trip to the Castlevania universe has been keenly anticipated since it was first confirmed by Netflix last year. The brief initial trailer, although just showcasing snapshots of Richter’s iconic blue Belmont cloak, the lethal Vampire Killer whip, and his intense gaze, attracted the attention of fans across the globe. Since then, the buzz has only grown, with a new teaser poster and Richter’s alluring character design sending waves of anticipation through the fandom.

In the end, what stands out is the palpable excitement surrounding Castlevania: Nocturne’s imminent premiere. Whether it will live up to its predecessor’s legacy or carve out its own unique place in the annals of animated vampire tales, only time will tell. But for now, the fans, just like the series’ vampire hunters, are ready to sink their teeth into this new adventure come September 28.
