Gun Interactive, the creators of the now-defunct Friday the 13th, is partnering with Sumo Nottingham for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

This isn't Leatherface's first time appearing in a video game, but it's definitely his first time to star in one.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre franchise is easily one of the divisive horror movie series. Although still iconic in the eyes of many and undoubtedly influential, the latter installments/remakes were widely panned by critics and audiences alike. However, with Netflix already working on a soft reboot, it appears that fans can also look forward to a Texas Chain Saw Massacre Game.

News of the upcoming Texas Chain Saw Massacre game appeared at The Game Awards 2021 with a brief teaser confirming the game. Unfortunately, no gameplay footage nor other details were shown. All that the teaser contained a quaint little town and a glimpse at Leatherface before he, presumably, goes on a murderous rampage and the words “Texas Chain Saw Massacre: a multiplayer horror game based on true events” flash across the screen.

As much uncertainty as there is around the Texas Chain Saw Massacre game, one thing that’s for sure is it’s taking inspiration from the source material, which marketed itself as something based on true events even though it was mostly fictional albeit slightly inspired by the infamous serial killer, Ed Gein.

Gun Interactive and Sumo Nottingham previously worked together on the widely popular Friday the 13th: The Game. The asymmetrical multiplayer title drew rave reviews from fans and was a commercial success – for the most part. Unfortunately, disputes over intellectual property rights forced Gun to shut down the game and abandon it. Thankfully, Gun has now found a new iconic horror franchise to try and bring to video game life.

Perhaps the best takeaway from the little that we’ve seen from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre video game is that it’s inspired by the original 1974 The Texas Chain Saw Massacre film, which many consider one of the scariest films of all time.

If nothing else, Gun can take everything that they learned from Friday the 13th: The Game and apply it to Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

In the meantime, horror video game fans can keep themselves busy watching the latest installment in iconic horror film franchises for the next couple of months. Scream 5 is set to premiere on January 14, 2022, with Netflix also bringing a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre film to the popular streaming platform on February 18, 2022.
