In a world where fairy tales often paint a picture of damsels in distress waiting for their knights in shining armor, Netflix is flipping the script with its upcoming fantasy adventure, Damsel. Starring Millie Bobby Brown, Damsel promises a narrative that’s as much about inner strength as it is about battling external monsters, such as dragons, if we believe its official teaser.

Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and set for a 2024 release, Damsel introduces us to Princess Elodie, played by Brown, who finds herself in a predicament far removed from the typical fairy tale fare. The film follows a young princess betrothed to a prince, only to discover that she’s been chosen as a sacrificial offering to a ferocious dragon in a bid to settle an ancient debt (sounds like your average Game of Thrones wedding).

The two-minute trailer and teaser art have now set the stage for what appears to be an epic journey of self-discovery as well as defiance. Opening with shots of Elodie trapped in a treacherous cave, the trailer, set to the haunting tune of ‘Run From Me’ by Timber Timbre, hints at a tale that’s dark, intense, and thrilling – the perfect combination for an epic blockbuster.

The best part about Damsel’s plot is how it challenges the archaic damsel-in-distress trope. Elodie’s story is one of self-reliance, as she quickly realizes that waiting for a savior isn’t an option. She must become her own hero in a way that resonates deeply in today’s world, where stories of empowerment and breaking free from traditional confines are more relevant than ever.

With a stellar cast comprising Angela Bassett, Robin Wright, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Ray Winstone, there’s more than enough talent to bring Fresnadillo’s story to life. Given how inspiring the plot appears to be, we’re confident Damsel will spark conversations about the roles we assign to ourselves and others in our own narratives.

Damsel’s initial release date was set for October 13. Because of the Hollywood strikes, which are now over, by the way, Netflix rescheduled the film, making it one of six major projects that the streaming platform decided to postpone until 2024.
