Pokémon trainers around the globe are excited as Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will offer a chance to capture two of the franchise’s most iconic and coveted Pokémon: Mew and Mewtwo.
As revealed during the recent Pokémon Presents event, The Pokémon Company has curated an enticing way for trainers to relive the legendary rivalry and it promises more than just a nostalgic rush.
The event, Get Mew & Mewtwo, unfolds in two captivating phases. The first is currently underway. By navigating to the Mystery Gift menu while online, players can obtain the elusive Mew for free by entering the password, GETY0URMEW. But, as all good things do, this offer has an expiration. Players have until September 18, 14:59 UTC to claim their prize. While each Mew’s Tera Type, nature, and move set will be different, it embodies the Mythical Pokémon’s renowned adaptability, offering players a unique experience with each iteration.
The second phase, however, is where the drama escalates. On September 1, the fearsome Mewtwo enters the scene as a 7-Star Raid Boss in special Tera Raid battles, where it will reign until September 17. Its entry as Psychic Tera-type means trainers will have to deploy their strongest Dark-type and Ghost-type Pokémon to the fray. But caution is advised, as it will prove to be a formidable challenge – a fact known to any Pokémon fan.
Interestingly, dataminers had already sussed out this revelation back in July, noting dialogues in the games referencing this legendary duo. Furthermore, an accidental leak by Nintendo provided a glimpse of the impending Mewtwo battle. Yet, the actual announcements managed to outshine the leaks, especially with the added detail that using Mew in the Tera Raid against Mewtwo grants Mew significant stat boosts – a 50 percent HP increase and a 20 percent bump in its stats like attack, defense, special attack, special defense, and speed.
This not only incentivizes using Mew in the raid but also adds a layer of strategy, reminiscent of the heart-wrenching battle between Mew and its genetically-engineered counterpart, Mewtwo.
The Pokémon Company has always been masterful in weaving past memories into their new offerings, and this event is no different. The Mew and Mewtwo narrative harks back to a poignant moment in Pokémon history, where a cloned Mewtwo grappled with existential questions, setting it on a collision course with Mew. Today, in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s Paldea region, players can recreate this iconic clash, a testament to the timeless appeal of the Pokémon narrative.
Yet, the Pokémon Presents showcase wasn’t solely about Mew and Mewtwo. It peeled back the curtain on several of the upcoming projects in the Pokémon series. There was the announcement of The Teal Mask – the first major expansion for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet set to release in September. Trainers can anticipate exploring new terrains, potentially with Mew or Mewtwo playfully trailing behind. Additionally, fans of the animated series were treated to the unveiling of two new Pokémon series, the integration of Scarlet and Violet Pokémon into Pokémon Go, and the addition of two nostalgic ’90s Pokémon spin-offs to Nintendo Switch Online.
As Pokémon Scarlet and Violet continue to evolve, it’s clear that The Pokémon Company is intent on blending the old with the new, offering a rich tapestry of experiences that cater to both veteran trainers and newcomers. And with Mew and Mewtwo at the forefront of this latest venture, the journey through the Paldea region just got a lot more thrilling.
