The highly anticipated Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 swung onto the PlayStation 5 scene on October 20, and within the first 24 hours of its release, soared past an impressive milestone, surpassing 2.5 million in sales. This extraordinary achievement marked Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 as the fastest-selling video game ever produced by PlayStation Studios.

The success story continued to unfold with Sony’s recent announcement, less than three weeks after the game’s launch.

In a post on X, Insomniac Games revealed that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 a remarkable milestone, hitting the 5 million units sold mark in a mere 11 days after its release. The swift and substantial sales figures underscore the immense popularity and widespread acclaim that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has garnered since its debut.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s performance is impressive given that it is exclusive to the PlayStation 5 console. The only other PlayStation Studios title to come close in recent times is God of War Ragnarok, which sold over 5 million units in five days, but it was on both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

More importantly, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s popularity, as is evident with the sales numbers, is proof that fans are enjoying it. Given it also impressed critics and received an overwhelmingly positive reception, it becomes evident that Insomniac Games did a great job with the title.

When the first Marvel’s Spider-Man title arrived in 2018, it enjoyed a similar reception selling 3.3 million units within three days. While the spinoff, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, didn’t reach the same heights, it had an equally impressive run selling 6.5 million units within 8 months of its release.

While there is no official word from Insomniac Games, there are hints of a third installment in the Marvel's Spider-Man franchise.

Given the performance the three games have put up, there is no doubt that Sony has a treasure trove on its hands that will ensure its consoles stay ahead of its fiercest competition in Xbox, much like the Gran Turismo and God of War franchises have done.

While Insomniac hasn’t said anything about another installment, there is a strong indication the company already has plans for it. For one, the game has a post-credits scene that hints at another sequel where the game’s many unanswered questions will be addressed. Comments from the game’s creative director during a recent podcast appearance also hinted that a third installment is in the plans.

Unfortunately, fans shouldn’t expect the studio to release Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 soon. Following the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the developers have turned their attention to Marvel’s Wolverine – a new game following the exploits of the titular character. While there is no timeline given for its release, there are speculations it will arrive next year, meaning the studio will have its hands full until then at the very least.
