Firaxis Games reveal Marvel's Midnight Suns gameplay

Similar to XCOM, players will have access to their own base of operations in Marvel's Midnight Suns. The Abbey is a cathedral-like establishment that plays host to several heroes from different Marvel factions. This includes the Avengers, X-Men, and Runaways.

As these heroes come with their own unique abilities, players will have to learn what they are capable of and which abilities to upgrade.

As revealed during the live stream, Marvel's Midnight Suns will feature a card system in place of the ability hotkeys used in the XCOM games. Apparently, players will be able to gain, upgrade, and combine these card abilities with moves from other heroes to perform synchronized attacks in the game for higher damage.

We can also see how the environments of Marvel's Midnight Suns feel and look a lot smaller compared to the XCOM games. Perhaps this is intentional, as the screen also has much less clutter in comparison as well. The entire UI vanishes during action sequences, giving way for the action and fight sequences.

Speaking of fighting, Marvel's Midnight Suns' environment feels alive and part of the action. Players will be able to take advantage of the terrain and use it in combat. For example, we can see in the video how players can throw enemies off of skyscrapers and onto each other, which conjures up memories of Loki and Thor's infamous "get help" routine from Thor: Ragnarok.

Last, but definitely not the least, the development team took the time to ease concerns about the game's cosmetic costume upgrades.

In a later statement on Twitter, the studio confirmed that the game will have no loot boxes. Instead, Marvel's Midnight Suns will have "purely cosmetic character skins for purchase that do not affect game balance in any way."

Marvel's Midnight Suns is the third Marvel game to release over the past two years. The first one, Marvel's Avengers, recently saw its War for Wakanda expansion go live. The second is Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. The game isn't scheduled to release until October 26. Finally, fans can look forward to playing Midnight Suns in March 2022.
