In a thrilling surprise for horror enthusiasts, it’s been confirmed that a sixth film in the Insidious franchise is in development. This time, it’s an exciting spin-off from the main storyline.
Thread: An Insidious Tale will be produced by Screen Gems, Blumhouse, and James Wan’s Atomic Monster, a power combo that should raise the spirits of Insidious fans around the globe. The film will be helmed and written by Jeremy Slater, who recently flexed his directing chops on Disney+ with Moon Knight.
The report comes from Deadline, confirming that Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani are close to signing a deal to star in this new chapter of the Insidious franchise.
This isn’t Slater’s first step into the horror genre. Previously, he showcased his knack for fear-inducing narratives before with the underrated TV series, Exorcist. But, this will mark Slater’s directorial debut, adding to the sense of fresh momentum behind the project.
Moore and Nanjiana are household names. The former, in particular, is an iconic actress/singer who starred in memorable titles like A Walk to Remember, 47 Meters Below and This is Us. The latter has also gone through a bit of a transformation lately, specifically for his starring role in Eternals, which may or may not be getting a sequel.
It’s up to Slater to direct the upcoming film that portrays the pair as a grieving husband and wife who are about to venture into the terrifying realm of the supernatural.
The spin-off deviates from the continuity of the existing four films as well as Insidious: The Red Door. The plot features the couple who will use a spell to go back in time and prevent the death of their young daughter. But, as is always the case with messing with fate, this triggers grave consequences. The promising narrative that intertwines heartrending emotion with spine-chilling horror is enough to get fans excited for what’s to come.
The concept of time travel also adds a new layer of intrigue to the growing Insidious universe, expanding the terrifying lore that’s closely associated with the ghostly realm, The Further.
The introduction of spells and time manipulation elements are sure to introduce fresh twists into the franchise.
Thread: An Insidious Tale doesn’t have a release date yet but fans can watch Insidious: The Red Door when it hits theaters on July 7. The film marks the closure of the Lambert family’s story arc.
