The Little Mermaid first made its way into theaters back in 1989. It was an immediate critical and commercial success, helping launch the House of Mouse into what many refer to as the Disney Renaissance era. Since then, the film has seen a successful stage adaptation and live musical presentation, with two direct-to-video sequels and an animated series that ran for 31 episodes.

Surprisingly enough, it's taken Disney nearly three decades to announce a live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. A little over half a decade since it was first announced, Disney has finally given the Halle Bailey-led remake a release date.
