The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the most highly anticipated game coming this year on Switch. The game has not yet been released, but Nintendo may have indirectly revealed plans for a DLC.
Nintendo has not officially announced any post-launch content for Tears of the Kingdom. However, the official website for the game contains a line of text at the bottom that states: “**Full version of game required to use DLC. Sold separately.”
However, the website does not contain any item annotated by two asterisks or mention a DLC anywhere else. Someone may have possibly copied generic text from another game or updated the website prematurely.
It will not come as a surprise to players that Nintendo plans to add a DLC for Tears of the Kingdom. Its prequel, Breath of the Wild, had multiple paid expansions in The Master Trials and The Champions’ Ballad. These two DLCS were part of the season pass and were released within the first year of the game.
Interestingly, Nintendo used the exact same language for the Breath of the Wilds expansion. Nintendo could announce a season pass for Tears of the Kingdom similar to the original.
If the company does have plans for a DLC, it will likely be announced during a dedicated Tears of the Kingdom showcase before the game’s release or in a post-launch event to drive continued interest in the open-world action RPG. The DLC expansions and season pass for Breath of the Wilds were announced three months after the game was released.
Nintendo may also time the announcement of a Tears of the Kingdom DLC until the next Nintendo Direct which traditionally happens in September or just four months after the game launches. This means we may be getting new content for the Zelda sequel towards the end of the year and possibly more in 2024.
We can assume that any potential DLC for Tears of the Kingdom would cost around $20 or more on top of the $70 price tag for the base game. It is the first Nintendo-published game to cost $70, following the price increase of both PlayStation and Xbox.
Nintendo recently announced a Collector’s Edition of Tears of the Kingdom that includes a Steel Book, poster, pin set, and Art book. This premium edition retails for $130 with pre-orders now live.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is arriving exclusively on the Nintendo Switch on May 12.
