Learn more about Sobble in the very first episode of Beyond the Pokedex

With decades worth of fictional lore, getting to know Pokemon is much easier said than done but it'll be easier with the help of the new show.

With potentially thousands of topics to cover, Beyond the Pokedex can potentially go on for years.

Immersing yourself into the enchanting world of Pokémon, it’s easy to feel intrigued by all the mysteries surrounding these pocket monsters – their traits, abilities, histories, and more. After all, there’s more to these captivating creatures than meets the eye.

Embracing this innate curiosity of the fans, The Pokémon Company just introduced a new monthly series on the streaming platform, YouTube.

Beyond the Pokedex is an innovative step expected to delve into the multifaceted narratives of the often not-so-bite-sized creatures, adding more depth to our understanding and appreciation of the Pokémon universe.

Hosted by the charmingly named duo, Spruce and Maple, the series promises to offer fascinating insights about the 1,000+ Pokémon. The inaugural episode set the tone by focusing on Sobble, an endearing water-type critter from Generation 8’s Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Viewers were taken on a whirlwind journey exploring Sobble’s origins, abilities, media appearances, and captivating trivia like the potency of its tears being equivalent to a hundred onions!

What sets Beyond the Pokédex apart from other shows is the ambitious approach it adopts to explore the Pokémon realm. The series isn’t confined to the virtual world of video games alone. Instead, it’s aiming to encapsulate Pokémon’s portrayal across multiple platforms, including animation, the Pokémon Trading Card Game, manga, and more. This broad-spectrum coverage is set to satiate the curiosity of die-hard Pokémon enthusiasts, offering a comprehensive understanding of the franchise’s universe, as seen through various lenses.

Beyond the Pokedex’s first episode is off to a slow but good start.

The Pokémon Company, over its 25-year journey, has mesmerized fans with its plethora of successful mainline entries, the enduring anime featuring Ash Ketchum, and even a live-action movie that featured Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu. This new venture is another feather in its cap, looking to keep the franchise’s fan base engaged and intrigued. ‘Beyond the Pokédex’ represents an inventive endeavor that complements the company’s recent initiatives, such as the launch of the official Pokémon forums.

Although the series is clearly scripted, the hosts’ wholesome and positive demeanor is reminiscent of Kit and Krysta from a discontinued fan-favorite series, Nintendo Minute. The premiere episode had humble beginnings with a little over 24,000 views at the time of writing. However, considering the breadth of content and the unwavering love for Pokémon, this series holds great potential for growth.

On a pragmatic note, delving into each of the 1,000+ Pokémon on a monthly basis means that Spruce and Maple won’t run out of content anytime soon. This promises to keep the Pokémon Company’s interaction with its fan base fresh and dynamic for a considerable while.

Sobble evolves into Drizzile at level 16 and Inteleon at level 35.

As we await the upcoming episodes, the Pokémon Company continues to prove why it remains a revered name. Through Beyond the Pokédex, it embraces its audience’s curiosity, using it as an opportunity to educate, entertain, and connect.

Fingers crossed, the next time we hear from them, it will reveal more about the next mainline Pokemon title, which may be the last entry on the Nintendo Switch with the NX2 scheduled to launch anytime soon.
