Sixteen-time world champion John Cena has been hinting at his potential last-minute involvement in WrestleMania 40. While not confirmed on the official card, Cena has dropped hints suggesting his interest in participating.
Cena’s most recent WWE appearance came last November, where he lost to Solo Sikoa at Crown Jewel. Since then, he has focused on his acting career, filming new projects like Season 2 of Peacemaker. However, recent comments hint at Cena’s possible return to the ring. Coincidentally, Cena’s loss to Sikoa was the last time The Bloodline’s so-called “Enforcer” has gone 0-28, losing every match he’s participated in heading into WrestleMania 40.
It’s possible that Cena’s return will coincide with a reignited feud with Sikoa, giving the Tribal Heir a chance to regain his status as a dominant force in the WWE.
During an interview on ESPN’s First Take, Cena playfully stated, “crossing my fingers” when asked about a potential WrestleMania match. He further fueled the speculation by mentioning his signature jorts, often worn exclusively for big matches, when discussing WrestleMania 40.
Similarly, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Cena acknowledged his schedule on April 6, coinciding with WrestleMania 40’s first night. He playfully dodged confirmation, leaving the possibility open.
While enthusiastic about the Showcase of the Immortals, Cena’s potential role remains unclear. Insurance limitations restrict him from high-risk in-ring activities because of his ongoing film projects. Thus, his involvement, if any, would have to be short and safe.
One possibility is a non-wrestling role, potentially interacting with The Bloodline. Who’s to say that we won’t get an Avengers: Endgame kind of moment where past rivals come together to help Cody Rhodes complete his story? Cena and a very enthusiastic “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, among others, could return and confront The Bloodline, preventing Roman Reigns’ family from interfering in the planned one-on-one match between Cody Rhodes and The Tribal Chief in Night 2 of WrestleMania 40.
Of course, the way that the current storyline is structured in the WWE, it’s become near impossible to predict what happens next: a heel turn for Seth Rollins is possibly even in the cards.
Regardless of his specific role, the potential presence of the face of the WWE’s Ruthless Aggression Era at WrestleMania 40 has excited fans. Whether he throws down inside of the ring or interacts with superstars in another capacity, his involvement promises to create another memorable moment for WWE fans.
