Veteran Hollywood producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, has provided an update on a potential new installment of the Nicolas Cage-led action-adventure film franchise National Treasure. He revealed that the sequel is in development, thereby allaying the fear of fans who worried they'll never see Cage grace the big screen as the character Benjamin Franklin Gates.
Bruckheimer provided this update while speaking with E! Online. While he was discussing the recently launched spinoff series, National Treasure: Edge of History, which is currently on Disney Plus. In his words, "We said we'd like to make another National Treasure and they said, 'Sure, let's come up with a new cast.' At the same time, we were developing National Treasure for the theaters with Nicolas Cage—which we still are. So, that's ongoing."
Before Bruckheimer's revelation, there'd been rumors of a third National Treasure film. But, when Cage was asked whether he would reprise his role in the franchise during a Reddit Q&A session with fans earlier in the year, he responded in the negative. The Ghost Rider actor stated that the studio was focused on turning the franchise into a TV show instead.
Disney Studios is currently airing the very same TV show Cage referred to with two actors from the Cage-led films reprising their roles amongst mostly fresh faces. The TV show has the same concept as the original films. Following the announcement of the series, there were fears that Cage's character will not feature in another National Treasure film. However, Bruckheimer's comments have firmly put those fears to bed.
