The ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes have thrown off the production schedules for DC’s upcoming movies and TV shows – as well as that of just about anything in Hollywood. However, James Gunn gives fans some promising news for one of the projects for Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.
Creature Commandos, an upcoming animated series, received a significant update amid the ongoing strike. According to a report by The Direct, Gunn confirmed that the first season of the animated series will have seven episodes.
Gunn also confirmed that the voice work for Creature Commandos has already been completed. The director gave a simple “Yes” when asked about the completion of the voice recordings, as is his usual approach to such confirmations.
This is positive news and may mean that the upcoming TV series will avoid lengthy delays caused by the Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Writers and actors are prohibited from working on movies and TV shows while the strike is in effect. There are exceptions to the rule but DC projects do not qualify as actors and writers can only work on truly independent films and shows.
Creature Commandos will be an R-rated animated series and is set in the present day. The series follows a team of military superhumans as they complete special missions. There have been rumors that the show may introduce Dinosaur Island and be related to a future Justice League film.
The animated series boasts of an impressive ensemble cast that includes Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Indira Varma as the Bride, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorous, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Sean Gunn as both GI Robot and Weasel, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, and Steve Agee as John Economos.
Creature Commandos has a significant connection to The Suicide Squad. Gunn announced the lineup for the upcoming animated series this year and said that Rick Flag Sr. will be appearing in other projects. Weasel is another character that ties into the Suicide Squad.
During the announcement of Creature Commandos, Gunn expressed his excitement for the upcoming show. “The first series that we’re doing, and I’ve already written the entire series, is Creature Commandos,” Gunn said.
Gunn also shared that DC will have a unique approach to its cinematic universe where animated shows, live-action, TV shows, movies, and even video games are set in the same universe. The director also revealed plans to cast actors who can play characters in Creature Commandos and appear in other future projects for the DC Universe.
Creature Commandos is coming in 2024.
