James Gunn explains why there are so many superheroes in Superman: Legacy

Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific will be part of the upcoming DCU movie.

Fans are worried that Superman: Legacy will have too many superheroes.

Superman: Legacy has been billed as a retelling of Clark Kent’s story, giving a new perspective without being an origin story. However, fans have been wondering why there are so many other superheroes in the movie.

DC Studios recently announced that it was casting several DC heroes in Superman: Legacy. Writer and director James Gunn explained on social media that the DC heroes are necessary to help tell Superman’s story.

In a Threads post, Gunn addressed the latest additions to the cast of the movie. Nathan Fillion has been cast as Green Lantern, Isabela Merced will play Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi stars as Mister Terrific – with possibly more to be revealed.

“They fit the story I’m telling,” Gunn wrote. Story always comes first.” Fans have applauded the casting additions to Superman: Legacy. It will be interesting how these characters will impact the overall plot of the movie.

Who are the new cast members for Superman: Legacy?

Green Lantern and Hawkgirl will be part of Superman: Legacy.

Nathan Fillion is no stranger to the DC Universe, or James Gunn. The actor was cast as The Detachable Kid in Gunn’s 2021 movie The Suicide Squad. Fillion also recently appeared as Master Carja in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The actor also did voice work for Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern in several animated films including 2015’s Justice League: Throne of Atlantis and 2018’s The Death of Superman. The pair have also collaborated on various non-superhero projects as well.

Isabela Merced is best known for her role as Dora the Explorer in the live-action of the cartoon series. She was also part of Transformers: The Last Knight as Izabella, an orphan who lives with Autobots Sqweeks and Canopy.

Edi Gathegi also has experience in superhero films as the actor was part of 2011’s X-Men: First Class. Gathegi played Armando Muñoz aka Darwin, a mutant that has the ability to automatically adapt to any situation.

Anthony Carrigan also joins the cast of Superman: Legacy as the superhero Metamorpho. The hero has the ability to change the elemental compounds of his body allowing himself to stretch, bounce, and reform himself like rubber or plastic – not to be confused with Plastic Man, who pretty much does the same thing.

Mister Terrific has also been added to the upcoming movie.

The new superheroes will join Clark Kent and Lois Lane played by David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan. Fans have reacted positively to the casting of Corenswet in the movie following the controversial departure of former Superman actor Henry Cavill. Many have commented on Corenswet’s resemblance to Cavill after the announcement of his casting.

Gunn teased that Superman: Legacy will be a “workplace origin story,” suggesting that the movie will explore Clark’s day job as a reporter for the Daily Planet. The introduction of new superheroes to the DCU opens up possibilities for future projects and potentially leads to a new Justice League movie.

Superman: Legacy is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025.
