James Gunn, a name now synonymous with the upcoming DC movies, is stepping into the spotlight once more. This time, he’s clutching the reins of an icon reborn, promising to launch the Man of Steel into an era of cinematic glory. To accomplish this, Gunn has confirmed that the upcoming Superman movie is being filmed specifically for IMAX screens.
Filming is currently taking place in Svalbard, where Gunn and cinematographer Henry Braham are working on the spectacle that will be Superman (previously titled Superman: Legacy). Every aerial maneuver and every display of superhuman finesse will be captured through the lens of the IMAX format, ensuring that when the man of steel takes flight, audiences will be left in awe.
The choice to embrace IMAX for the entire film stems from a desire to give audiences a true spectacle. Dune: Part Two, still showing in theaters, is a clear example of this. If Denis Villeneuve’s success is anything to go by, Gunn is fully aware that anything less than IMAX for a reboot of the Last Son of Krypton would be a disappointment to fans all over the world.
Superman might be a year away from landing in theaters, but that has not diminished the anticipation for the DCU film. Gunn and Warner Bros. Discovery have amped up the project, with especially high praise for the new cast that comprises David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
Some fans of Henry Cavill and Amy Adams, the actors who previously played these roles, have expressed their skepticism about the fresh faces. Still, Gunn has voiced his support for the new cast, asserting that they’re “among the best he’s ever seen or worked with.”
Superman is set to be part of DCU’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, which will consist of Creature Commandos, The Brave and the Bold, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, among many other projects.
Though some fans might be daunted by the task of having to watch past DCEU projects to get acquainted with new DCU films, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has confirmed that Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters will serve as a jumping-off point for new audiences.
Superman is scheduled to fly into theaters on July 11, 2025.
