Jack Black performs The Super Mario Bros. Movie hit song “Peaches” live

Jack Black has finally come out of his turtle shell to serenade The Super Mario Bros. Movie fans with a live performance of "Peaches".

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has soared to the top of this year’s box office charts, and a major factor behind its success has undeniably been the incredible performance by the one and only Jack Black.

Playing the role of the villainous Bowser, Jack Black captivated audiences with his rendition of “Peaches” on the piano in a mid-credits scene, only to be abruptly interrupted by a Mushroom Kingdom guard, leaving fans wanting more. But fear not, for Jack Black has made it up to his fans with a spectacular live performance of the hit song, complete with a full orchestra.

At the Game Awards 10-Year Concert at the Hollywood Bowl, Black rocked a Bowser-inspired ensemble from the Lyrical Lemonade YouTube video, belting out the infectious tune that had the crowd singing along. Joined by his Tenacious D partner, Kyle Gass, the duo also performed a killer rendition of their smash hit, “Video Games.”

Even though he’s no stranger to the music scene, Black had some reservations about performing the “Peaches” track for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, as he candidly revealed in a recent interview with IGN.

We had already had a few sessions; I think we were a year in when [directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic] first sprung it on me. They were like, ‘How would you feel about Bowser singing a song?’ And I was like, ‘Ooh, I don’t know.’ I’m very protective about my singing career with my band, Tenacious D.

I try not to do too many crossovers where my characters sing unless […] that’s what we set out to do. ‘Are we doing a musical? If we are, then I want to hear the music before I agree to do it.’ So I said, ‘Let me hear what you got, what do you got?’ They sent over this little song, and I just couldn’t deny that it was funny. I was like, I get it. I see why you want Bowser to do this, tickling the ivories and singing a love song to Peaches. It was undeniable.

Jack Black has expressed interest in a potential sequel that features Pedro Pascal as the voice of Wario, the film’s antagonist.

Considering the astronomical number of YouTube views and the immense internet buzz surrounding the song (this is on top of the endless stream of memes), it’s safe to say that “Peaches” will likely secure an Oscar nomination in the upcoming awards season.

And who knows, if the film manages to snatch an Academy Award, we might even witness another electrifying performance of the track from Jack Black.
