It’s been a hot minute since we’ve had a new Gears title, with Gears 5 revving its chainsaw back in 2019. Since then, the Gears have been a bit rusty, but Cliff Bleszinski, the original creator of the series, has recently posted a series of tweets that have gotten Gearheads talking.
Known within gaming circles as CliffyB, Bleszinski revealed that he’s not just ready to jump back into the fray; he’s suggesting he might even spice things up with a little… let’s say, edgy content for the franchise.
In his first tweet, Bleszinski made a direct, albeit light-hearted, proposal to Microsoft, stating, “Gears 6 is trending. MS, you have my #.” He accompanied the same tweet with his trademark humor: “Maybe I’ll find a way to get ass eating in the Gears franchise.”
Despite Bleszinski’s open invitation and fans’ hopeful wishes, Microsoft seems to be playing it cool. CliffyB admitted that he’s been left on read, with no response from Microsoft. As he explained in his next tweet, he’s resorted to making jokes, because that’s what you do when you create one of the most iconic gaming franchises and get ghosted, right?
Now, let’s not forget that this guy hasn’t been at the helm since Gears of War 3, and the series has been chugging along with The Coalition in charge. Unsurprisingly, the franchise hasn’t quite hit the same sweet, bloody spot since he left. Gears 5, the latest installment, had its moments, but can you honestly say it gave you the same rush as the original trilogy? Yeah, I didn’t think so.
The burning question now is: will Gears of War 6 see the return of its prodigal creator? Or will it be another Coalition-led dance with the Swarm? If it does happen, and that’s a big if, imagine the possibilities.
We could be looking at a return to the gritty, heart-pumping action that made Gears legendary. Who knows, maybe CliffyB might just sneak in some of his off-the-wall humor into the mix and trigger some random people somewhere on a certain subreddit.
Rumor has it that Gears of War 6 is targeting a 2026 release date, as the latest news from The Coalition is that it has dropped all other projects to focus on the much-awaited Gears title. Keeping in mind that Microsoft laid off a huge chunk of employees of The Coalition, it’s highly probable that there’s immense pressure within the corridors of the Canadian developer to turn in a sensational game.
This might explain why there are reports that the upcoming installment will be “more open” than Gears 5. What this means exactly is anyone’s guess, but we can assume that Gears 6 will try to rectify the biggest problems gamers had with the semi-open world setting introduced in Gears 5.
If this happens to be the case, a reunion between Bleszinski and The Coalition might be the key to unlocking a vast Gears world that still remains faithful to the franchise’s roots.
