Cyberpunk 2077 had a great reception when it arrived in 2020. Unfortunately, the action role-playing title also had many bugs which pissed off fans and led to much criticism. CD Projekt Red, the game’s developer, has tried to fix these bugs as best as it can over the years with updates. However, after the newly released update 2.0, the studio has decided to move on from the title and begin work on a sequel.
CD Projekt Red’s game director Gabe Amatangelo broke this news during a recent interview with PC Gamer. Amatangelo confirmed that the latest update as well as the recently released Phantom Liberty expansion are the last big upgrades that are coming to the title. Then, he said that his team is working on a sequel with a tentative title of Cyberpunk 2 or Orion.
In his words, “2.0 and Phantom Liberty are the last big updates. We’ll do a little something more, but those are the last big ones.”
Amatangelo’s PC Gamer interview isn’t the first we will hear of a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel. That honor belongs to CD Projekt Red’s long-term video strategy that came to light late last year. In the video, the studio announced it’s working on a sequel that’s codenamed Project Orion similar to what Amatangelo revealed.
The studio certainly seems ambitious about the project. In the strategy video, it stated that the sequel would “prove the full power and potential of the Cyberpunk universe.” It further said that it would “take the Cyberpunk franchise further and continue harnessing the potential of this dark future universe.”
The Cyberpunk 2077 sequel is certainly welcome news. Although the title got off to a rocky start, it has since evolved to provide a remarkable experience for fans. Recently, we told you of how the game has attracted the highest number of players on Steam since it launched in 2020.
If nothing else, this suggests that fans are starting to enjoy the game again. It also implies that they love the title’s story and themes. Because of this, we think a sequel will be popular with fans, especially if it is devoid of the issues we saw with Cyberpunk 2077.
Although we know there is a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel on the way, we do not have any idea of its potential launch date. We certainly hope it doesn’t take as much time as the original though given it took about eight years between preliminary work and final release.
By the way, the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel isn’t the only project that CD Projekt Red is working on. The studio is also reportedly developing three new titles that are set in The Witcher universe as well as one that is based on a standalone IP. We haven’t received official confirmation of these projects but we hope it will come soon, especially where The Witcher games are concerned.
For now, you can enjoy the expansion, Phantom Liberty, exclusive on next-gen consoles, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X, as well as PC.
