How to catch a Red Snapper in Stardew Valley

Red Snapper is a common fish in terms of rarity, but this guide shows you the proper way of triggering its spawning criteria.

How To Catch A Red Snapper In Stardew Valley

In terms of its rarity, Red Snapper is one of the easier fishes to catch in Stardew Valley. However, the Red Snapper’s spawn criteria nevertheless make it difficult to catch. This guide covers everything you need to know about the Red Snapper in Stardew Valley.

Where to catch the Red Snapper?

You can catch the Red Snapper in Ocean water body type at either The Beach or the Beach Farm during Summer and Fall. Unfortunately, unlike the Tiger Trout, Red Snapper needs rainy weather to spawn.

It can also be caught during the Winter season if you have a Rain Totem – more on that below. The difficulty level of the Red Snapper is 40 and it spawns between 6 A.M. and 7 P.M.

Another method of catching the Red Snapper is by using Magic Bait. Magic Bait helps you catch the Red Snapper regardless of weather, time, or season.

Magic Bait ignores all criteria and helps you catch all sorts of fish.
You can buy Magic Bait for 5 Qi’s Gem from Mr. Qi.

Another unusual way of obtaining the Red Snapper is by searching the trash cans during Summer, Fall, or Winter.

Finally, the Traveling Cart has a chance of selling the fish for 150g – 1,000g. The Traveling Cart is found south of your Farm next to the Wizard Tower.

The Traveling Cart spawns on Friday and Sunday from 6 A.M. to 8 P.M.

Rain Totems

A Rain Totem is a craftable item used to cause rain. Upon consumption, the totem sets the weather for the next day to rainy. You can only craft the totem after reaching Foraging level 9. You can also randomly find it in the treasure rooms of the Skull Cavern.

You can craft the Rain Totem using 1 Hardwood, 1 Truffle Oil, and 5 Pine Tar.

As mentioned before, rain is one of the contributing factors to the spawn rate of the Red Snapper. Rain Totem helps you get the rain at will. Note that if the weather is stormy, it won’t set the next day to rain. It will continue to set it as stormy.

What is the use of Red Snapper?

Red Snapper has a lot of uses in the game. Some are major, while the others only serve to help earn some extra coins.

Community Center

Red Snapper is part of the Ocean Fish Bundle used to restore the Fish Tank in the Community Center. So you need to deliver one to the Community Center, among other Ocean type fishes.

Recipes

Red Snapper is used in the following recipes:

  • Maki Roll
  • Quality Fertilizers
  • Sashimi

Gifting

You can also gift the fish to the NPCs in the game — however, none of the characters like Red Snapper. Gifting the Red Snapper to the following characters will neither affect your relationship negatively, nor will it affect it positively.

  • Demetrius
  • Elliot
  • Leo
  • Linus
  • Pam
  • Sebastian
  • Willy

If you gift the Red Snapper to any other character, they will dislike it or hate it. This will result in your relationship status deteriorating with them.

Tailoring

Red Snapper can be used at the Sewing Machine to create a dyeable Sailor Shirt. As the name suggests, Red Snapper can also be used as a red dye in the Sewing Machine or the Dye Pots at Emily and Haley’s house.

Fish Ponds

Fish Ponds can be built by asking Robin at the Carpenter’s Shop. She will ask for 200 Stone, 5 Seaweed, and 5 Green Algae. It will take her two days to build a 5×5 pond on your farm.

You can place Red Snapper in your pond to reproduce the fish. They will reproduce every two days, and often only produce Red Snapper Roe. You can increase the initial pond capacity from 3 to 10 by completing fish quests. Fish quests require collecting and throwing certain items in the pond. This increases the pond capacity of the particular fish you’re throwing the items in for. The following items increase the pond capacity of the Red Snapper.

  • Pond Capacity 3 to 5: Throw in 3 Driftwood, 1 Frozen Geode, or 1-2 Seaweed.
  • Pond Capacity 5 to 7: Throw in 2 Clams or 2 Coral.
  • Pond Capacity 7 to 10: Throw in 2 Aquamarine, 1 Mussel, or 2 Sea Urchins.

Quests

Besides the fish quests, there are other random quests as well. There is a possibility for a single Red Snapper to be requested during Summer, Fall, or Winter at the community board outside Pierre’s General Store. If you deliver the Red Snapper, you will earn 150g for a fish and 150 friendship points.

Each fish you give Willy will reward you with 150g.

Willy or Demetrius might randomly request 1-4 Red Snappers during Summer, Fall, or Winter at the community board outside Pierre’s General Store. You can earn 50g per Red Snapper delivered. As a bonus, you get to keep the fish.
