Activision revealed a good while ago that they consider Warzone to be a long-term element of the Call of Duty franchise, despite the standard yearly releases.
With Black Ops - Cold War launching soon, players were eager to learn how the free-to-play battle royale mode will be integrated with the new game. The developers have since spilled the beans and given us a clear rundown of how the two titles will coexist in the new climate of the next generation.
The main new feature hitting Warzone alongside Cold War is cross-platform and cross-generation play. This means that players from every single platform that supports Warzone will be able to play together without restriction. Potentially, we'll see matches where squads are comprised of players from PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X in every kind of combination.
Whether this is something to be celebrated or not is arguable, as many console players blame cross-play for allowing PC cheaters and hackers to compromise their games.

As for progression persistence, we have good news - all of your current progress in Call of Duty: Warzone, and any items unlocked in Modern Warfare, will be carried over. In essence, since Warzone is a standalone client, we're not talking about a new game like "Warzone Cold War" or somesuch - the same Warzone you've been playing all this time is simply getting a whole lot of new content.
