Warner Bros. Discovery has released the first teaser trailer for the forthcoming fourth installment of its critically acclaimed anthology crime drama television series True Detective. The entertainment behemoth revealed the trailer on Wednesday, April 12, during the unveiling event for its new streaming service Max slated to launch on May 23.
The official synopsis for True Detective: Night Country reads, “When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”
True Detective: Night Country stars two-time Academy Award winner Jodie Foster and former boxer Kali Reis in the lead roles of Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro respectively. Other members of the cast include Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Isabella Star Lablanc, Aka Niviâna, Anna Lambe, Joel D. Montgrand, Christopher Eccleston, and John Hawkes.
Mexican producer and director Issa López, best known for her work on the 2017 crime fantasy film Tigers Are Not Afraid, serves as season showrunner. Apart from her showrunning duty, López writes and directs all the show’s episodes. She is also one of the executive producers, alongside Foster, Barry Jenkins, Harrelson, McConaughey, Pizzolatto, and several others.
The first season of True Detective aired on HBO in 2014. The anthology crime drama series was created by Nic Pizzolatto and starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as a pair of detectives that work to unmask a ritualistic serial killer over a 17-year period. True Detective Season 1 received numerous critical acclaim and was the recipient of several awards and accolades.
The show’s second and third installments aired in 2015 and 2019 respectively with different stories and cast and in different locations. The second season starred Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, Rachel McAdams, and Vince Vaughn as the major characters, while the third season saw Mahershala Ali in that role.
By the way, Warner Bros. Discovery’s new streaming platform, Max, will bring the company’s two primary streaming platforms HBO Max and Discovery+ under one umbrella and for the same price that HBO Max currently costs. However, it is not the only such platform the company has in store. In February, Bloomberg reported that the media and entertainment conglomerate is working on a free ad-supported streaming platform named WBTV with the goal of offering viewers more options and catching up on streaming rivals Netflix and Disney+.
At the moment, there is no official release date for True Detective: Night Country; however, it is expected to arrive sometime later this year.
