No, Gunfire Games isn’t working on a new Darksiders game. If we’re being honest, the studio might never go back to give us fans the four-player co-op game featuring the Four Horsemen we’ve always wanted. But, at the very least, Gunfire is succeeding in its latest venture.
Remnant 2 has made a grand entrance on the gaming stage, quickly securing the number two top seller spot on Steam and peaking at 88,502 concurrent players, comfortably surpassing its predecessor’s peak of 48,194. That alone would warrant a discussion, but there’s more to it than just numbers.
The game embodies a brilliant mix of third-person shooting set in alien dimensions, coupled with an emphasis on weapon upgrading, ammo conservation, big, strange bosses, randomization, and surprises. The intro alone will hook you in, taking you to an Earth in ruins with a mishap with a dimension-teleporting stone landing you in a horrifying alien world. The lure of the unknown keeps you hooked, the thrill of the unexpected keeps you on your toes, and the sheer fun of gameplay binds it all together.

With that said, Gunfire Games is aware that success is fleeting and it’s committing to improving Remnant 2 even further but not before acknowledging the warm welcome it has received from gamers.
Despite the co-op game being generally more enjoyable with friends, Gunfire focused on creating a standalone experience, rather than joining the live service bandwagon. Although Remnant 2 was designed with upscaling in mind and isn’t immune from performance issues, the studio is determined to refine and improve the game.
Now, this isn’t to say Remnant 2 is perfect, but much of the game’s criticism seems to echo the tiresome trend of focusing on every flaw and ignoring the grand scheme of things – something that Diablo 4 and its development team can relate to.
At the end of the day, while there’s room for improvement in Remnant 2, it isn’t enough to overshadow the experience. To many, the co-op shooter is a bundle of joy that keeps on giving. It’s immersive, packed with random events, and it’s just plain fun. And isn’t that what gaming should be about?
Amidst the crescendo of criticisms, the game’s charm persists. Remnant 2 has made vast strides since its predecessor, with improved visuals, better PC performance, and impressive class depth, earning the fictional title of “The Best Soulslike of the Year” in the eyes of many.
In Remnant 2, even its secrets have secrets, making it a treasure trove for exploration enthusiasts. It’s a refreshing change of pace amidst controversial releases that are criticized for not having enough content.
Remnant 2 is available now for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and the PC, skipping the last-gen consoles. and PC, though it has skipped last-gen consoles.
Ultimately, it’s just the beginning for Remnant 2. It’s a long journey ahead for Gunfire and its players. After all, players have only begun tapping into how much fun they can have with that dimension-teleporting stone.
As the player base grows and the developers continue to improve the game, Remnant 2 may well become a beacon for the rare looter-shooter soulslike game, showing the potential for innovation, surprise, and sheer fun in the genre.
For now, it’s a wild ride that’s well worth getting onboard for.
