The rebooted MonsterVerse franchise is currently four films deep, with an animated series over at Netflix currently in the works. Now, you can add a live-action TV show to that list after Apple ordered one for their streaming service, Apple TV+.
It's no secret that movie franchises are expanding their reach beyond just theaters, and we're not just talking about hybrid releases either. With the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars, Disney is using TV shows on Disney+ to expand on each respective universe's lores. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. is using HBO Max for the same purpose. Apple TV+ is just the latest to do so with a movie franchise that's literally quite gigantic.
Apple TV+ announced the live-action Godzilla series by Legendary Television, with the synopsis confirming that it will pick up just right after the earth-shattering events of 2021's Godzilla vs. Kong.
2014's Godzilla reboot wasn't perfect, but the combination of positive critical reviews and earning $524.9 million at the global box office was more than enough to kickstart an entire movie franchise. Since then, 2017's Kong: Skull Island, 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and the aforementioned Godzilla vs Kong, which, by the way, was one of the first big box office successes of the pandemic era, have all followed suit.
