Ghostface might be the next guest character headed to Mortal Kombat 1

We're desperately hoping that Mortal Kombat 1's Ghostface uses the now-iconic "Wazzup" phrase as part of its dialogue.

Ghostface wouldn't be the first horror icon to grace the roster of a Mortal Kombat game.

Mortal Kombat 1, the latest installment in the iconic fighting game franchise, has officially launched. And, while it’s reviewing well, the intrigue around the game is fueled not just by its gameplay or roster of characters but also by the mystery surrounding its future content.

Developers at Netherrealm Studios have previously confirmed characters for the first Kombat Pack, which include a list of notable names such as Homelander from The Boys, DC’s Peacemaker, and Omni-Man from Invincible. The selections hint at the studio’s inclination towards including superheroes in the game’s ever-expanding universe. However, recent data mining activities suggest there might be more on the horizon.

Players with a keen eye and knack for detective work have been delving into the game’s dialogue files. Their findings? A handful of potential evidence pointing towards the inclusion of Ghostface, the iconic antagonist from the Scream movies.

We await the day that a Mortal Kombat game will bring together all the horror movie icons under one roster.

Dialogue exchanges between characters like Omni-Man and Takeda have lines such as, “Takes more than a mask and a knife to scare me” and “A mask and a cloak don’t scare me.” While these lines could be interpreted in many ways, their correlation with Ghostface’s characteristics – a masked villain with a knife – is hard to ignore. Another line from Omni-Man, “Fuck movies. Nothing beats a good book,” seems like a cheeky nod to Ghostface, given the latter’s obsession with horror movies.

Although Ghostface’s addition would be in line with previous inclusions of horror icons like Leatherface, Jason Vorhees, and Freddy Krueger in the Mortal Kombat universe, it’s essential to approach these findings with caution. They remain unconfirmed and could very well be a part of some other content or merely red herrings.

Interestingly, Mortal Kombat 1’s early access phase also led to dataminers uncovering eight potential DLC characters. These names, supposedly found due to their voice lines within the game files, include Noob Saibot, Robot Cyrax, and Kotal among others. Ghostface was also part of this speculated list.

After Mortal Kombat 11’s action hero-filled guest character roster, it looks like Mortal Kombat 1 is leading more towards comic books, superheroes, and horror icons.

The current game has over 20 playable characters at launch. Still, if the alleged leaks are anything to go by, the roster will see many more faces – familiar and new. And while Ghostface’s inclusion remains speculative, other names such as Harley Quinn, Doomslayer, and Conan the Barbarian are said to be part of the game’s expanding roster.

Moreover, there’s chatter about a possible Story Mode expansion focusing on Sub-Zero’s evolution to Noob Saibot, as well as integrating the tales of Cyrax and Sektor. This narrative deep dive, if it materializes, would be in line with previous games like Mortal Kombat 11, which added new story chapters through DLC.

It’s clear that NetherRealm has big plans for Mortal Kombat 1. Whether it’s the introduction of iconic characters, story expansions, or surprising crossovers, fans have a lot to look forward to.

Mortal Kombat 1 isn’t the best entry in the franchise but it’s a worthy addition.

Of course, we’re hoping that NetherRealm shapes up and fixes the Switch version, which the internet is making fun of lately
