Enhanced safety is taking priority for The Game Awards 2023

A much safer and more secure The Game Awards will be waiting for the audiences in-person and at home on December 7.

In response to the security concerns raised by last year’s event, The Game Awards 2023, helmed by Geoff Keighley, is implementing enhanced security measures. This decision comes after unexpected and unauthorized stage incidents during previous award shows, specifically, last year. As the industry prepares for this year’s event on December 7, the focus is not just on celebrating the world of gaming but also ensuring the safety of all participants.

The need for bolstered security became evident following two separate incidents where individuals had unauthorized access to the stage. The most notable of these occurred during last year’s Game Awards, where an unexpected intruder disrupted the ceremony. This incident, coupled with a similar occurrence at Gamescom Opening Night Live in August, where the host was briefly interrupted by an attendee, has led to a reevaluation of security protocols.

Keighley, in a recent Twitch Q&A livestream, acknowledged these concerns. He emphasized the importance of safety for everyone involved in the show, including the audience, participants, and himself. However, he refrained from detailing specific security measures, citing the sensitive nature of such information. This approach is understandable, given the objective of maintaining an element of surprise to effectively manage any potential threats.

What would've been the chances that someone stormed to the stage at The Game Awards to ask why Starfield wasn't nominated for GOTY?

The Game Awards, renowned for its celebration of gaming achievements and announcements, is an annual high-profile event that attracts significant attention worldwide. With such visibility, especially following the cancelation of E3, there’s always the potential for unforeseen interruptions or security breaches. Therefore, the decision to ramp up security is a timely and essential decision. It addresses the dual goals of safeguarding those present at the event and ensuring the smooth running of the ceremony.

In light of these changes, The Game Awards 2023 promises to be a safer and more secure event. While it’s impossible to predict every scenario, the proactive stance taken by the organizers demonstrates their commitment to the well-being of all involved. It’s a necessary and responsible step in today’s environment, where the safety of public gatherings can no longer be taken for granted.

The Game Awards 2023 is maintaining a similar length and number of reveals as last year, balancing the celebration of the gaming industry and keeping the event concise. Unfortunately, this might mean that we won’t be getting epic moments such as the one involving the voice of Kratos, Christopher Judge, from last year.

As much as people love to meme about them, the security breaches in events like The Game Awards are a serious security threat.

Firmly established as one of gaming’s biggest annual fixtures, this year’s The Game Awards is expected to see the debut of the first teaser for Grand Theft Auto and more trailers from whatever projects Hideo Kojima is working on.

Baldur’s Gate 3, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Alan Wake 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Super Mario Wonder, and Resident Evil 4, have been nominated for the GOTY award.
