Jon Landau debunks Avatar 3 rumors

True to his word, the page has since been edited and the film simply reads as Avatar 3. Cameron, the Avatar franchise's creator, is in part responsible for rumors of the Avatar 3 title. In 2018, there was a leak that seemingly provided the titles to the four confirmed sequels of the franchise, and the following year, Cameron admitted that the leaked titles were among several that were in consideration for their respective films.

While he maintained nothing was set in stone, Avatar 2 would release under the leaked title, providing legitimacy to the leak. Landau's comments suggest this is no longer the case hinting that the production team has decided to go with another title instead.

The rationale behind this decision is anybody's guess at this point. However, the team may want to maintain an element of mystery around the film, and confirming the title this far out from its release will affect that. It is also possible that Landau is lying about the title change – once again to preserve an air of mystery for the film. Regardless of the team's motive, Avatar 3's title will eventually make it out to the public, especially as its release date approaches.

At the moment, there is a dearth of information about Avatar 3's plot details. However, one thing we do know is that it will continue the franchise's trend of introducing a new Na'vi tribe in every installment like the first and second did with the Omatikaya and Metkayina tribes.

The new tribe, the Ash People, will showcase a different side to the Na'vi unlike what audiences have seen with the first two tribes. They will also be the antagonists of the third film, perhaps alongside humans who fulfilled that role in the first two films.

We also know that the film will see Lo'ak replace his father Jake Sully as the narrator signalling a changing of the guard and giving an insight into Cameron's plans for the future of the franchise.

Avatar 3 will glide into theaters on December 19, 2025. The fourth and fifth installments have tentative release dates of December 21, 2029, and December 19, 2031, respectively.

In the meantime, fans can experience the world through the game Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora which arrived on Amazon Luna, Windows, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X, on December 7, and reportedly has clues for Avatar 3.
