Everspace 2 developer praises Xbox Game Pass for boosting sales

Rockfish Games' co-founder claims that sales of Everspace 2 actually increased as a result of the game being on the Xbox Game Pass.

We're still curious about how Microsoft measure the success of games on the Game Pass.

Rockfish Games, the studio behind Everspace 2, turned some heads when it praised the Xbox Game Pass. According to the developers of the fast-paced open-world space shooter, the Game Pass isn’t as detrimental to game sales as it’s made out. Contrary to popular belief, the Game Pass might even contribute positively to the sales of Everspace 2 and included games, in general.

Michael Schade, the CEO and co-founder of Rockfish Games, presented at Reboot Develop 2023 where he spoke positively about the Xbox Game Pass.

According to Schade, the company found out four things following the development and subsequent release of Everspace 2:

  • Higher-priced early access titles attract more engaged players
  • Wishlists no longer translate to sales, unlike before
  • Steam seasonal sales are no longer as popular
  • Sales increased as a result of being on the Game Pass instead of the other way around

Everspace 2 is a direct sequel to the original Everspace game, which came out in 2017. However, unlike the rogue-like first game, Everspace 2 fully embraced its fast-paced and open-world space shooter concept. To challenge gamers, Everspace 2 features increasingly difficult sectors, weapons crafting, as well as ship customization options. It also has an overarching plot told through various NPCs in the game.

Everspace 2 was initially released as an Early Access title on Steam on January 18, 2021, before launching earlier this month on April 6 on the PC. A full version for the PS5 and the Xbox Series S/X will arrive in August.

The data provided by the developers of Everspace 2 is pretty definitive albeit inconclusive.

Ultimately, one developer’s support doesn’t change the general view about the Game Pass. While Rockfish Games might’ve made bank from adding Everspace 2 to the Game Pass, this doesn’t mean that every other developer is as lucky. It’s best to treat each case separately and accept the reality that the subscription is risky for the studios involved. After all, the purpose of the Game Pass is to sustain itself, which might come at the expense of making a profit for the developers. It’s unlike the subscription services offered by Nintendo and Sony, which are aimed at selling more consoles.

Speaking of the Game Pass, Microsoft recently expanded the popular streaming service to 40 new countries.
