FromSoftware’s open-world action RPG, Elden Ring, continues to dominate sales charts, selling 23 million copies worldwide since February 2022. This was announced alongside the reveal of its upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, further solidifying Elden Ring‘s position as one of the best-selling titles of all time.
Elden Ring‘s sales include physical copies and digital downloads, showcasing its appeal. This is in stark contrast to its well-deserved reputation as a challenging “Souls-like” experience traditionally associated with a niche audience.
Notably, Elden Ring‘s sales come close to matching 2023’s best-seller, Hogwarts Legacy, demonstrating its ability to break into the mainstream gaming market despite targeting a relatively smaller market.

Elden Ring‘s success extends beyond sales figures. The game earned critical acclaim as it won numerous awards including Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2022. It’s easily the best-selling FromSoftware title, surpassing the sales performance of Dark Souls and Bloodborne.
Shadow of the Erdtree promises to further expand on the base game’s success when it comes out on June 21. It will introduce new regions, challenging enemies, and weapons, delving deeper into the lore of the Lands Between. This content, coupled with the high player engagement on platforms like Steam, is expected to fuel further sales growth for Elden Ring, perhaps helping it reach 30 million.
With its enduring success, Elden Ring has opened discussions about the future of the franchise. Unfortunately, its creator, Hidetaka Miyazaki, is ruling out the possibility of an immediate DLC or sequel but he’s leaving the door open to revisit the series sometime in the future.
While recent developments paint a bleak picture for AAA development, several titles in recent years have also posted historically high sales figures. In addition to Elden Ring and Hogwarts Legacy, Cyberpunk 2077 has also since sold more than 25 million copies, propelled further by the release of its award-winning DLC, Phantom Liberty. Finally, this year’s biggest surprise hit, Palworld, recently confirmed that it has welcomed more than 25 million players across Steam and Game Pass.
