The closure of Studio Onoma, formerly known as Square Enix Montreal, might have come as a bit of a shock to the gaming industry. After all, the studio literally just changed its name because of the Embracer Group acquisition. But, while the shutdown is indeed unfortunate, there's a small silver lining.
Bloomberg's Jason Schreier claims that Deus Ex's lead development studio, Eidos Montreal, is also working on a new Deus Ex game.
It's worth noting that Schreir previously denied that Eidos Montreal had a Deus Ex game in the works. But, it's possible that Embracer Group noticed the fan interest in the sci-fi RPG series and gave Embracer Group the green light to work on a new installment. The Studio Onoma employees could then come aboard Square Enix Montreal to start development on this game as the "core" team worked on the new IP.
At the time of the purchase, Embracer Group confirmed it saw the possibility of it revisiting the IPs it was acquiring. So far, the only game in development is a new Tomb Raider entry, which will use Unreal Engine 5.
