EA is making a single player Black Panther game

Cliffhanger Games will be leading the development of the upcoming Marvel game.

The Black Panther project is still early in development.

Wakanda fans, prepare your hard drives – Black Panther will be getting a stand-alone action-adventure game from EA. The publisher officially announced that it will be collaborating with Marvel Games for the upcoming title.

Cliffhanger Games will be leading the development of the untitled Black Panther game. The studio is led by Kevin Stephens, former studio chief of Monolith Productions, having worked on both Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. Stephens also worked on Halo, God of War, and Call of Duty.

“We’re dedicated to delivering fans a definitive and authentic Black Panther experience, giving them more agency and control over their narrative than they have ever experienced in a story-driven video game,” Stephens said in a statement.

“Wakanda is a rich SuperHero sandbox, and our mission is to develop an epic world for players who love Black Panther and want to explore the world of Wakanda as much as we do.” While this is all pretty vague, it does give off ever so slight open world hints.

The upcoming game is different from the Marvel Games and Skydance New Media collaboratiob starring Captain America and Black Panther. The game announced in September is being led by Amy Hennig, former creative director for the Uncharted series, and will be set during World War II.

The new Black Panther project will be the second game in the publishers’s agreement with Marvel, as EA Motive is developing an untitled Iron Man single-player game. The Iron Man project is being led by Olivier Proulx who previously worked on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy for Eidos Montreal. Proulx left the studio after it was sold by Square Enix to the Embracer Group.

The untitled Black Panther project is reportedly “still early in development with a long road ahead.” Given how long game development is these days, it may still be a few years away. Add to that the standard gamut of AAA delays, and we’re left wondering if they should have started a bit (or a lot) sooner.

EA has not announced what platforms the upcoming title will hit. However, the deal with Marvel Games involves developing games for PC and consoles. We expect the upcoming game to be on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. While less likely, it might also possibly hit the Nintendo Switch (or its successor).

Black Panther is the second game in a three-title deal with Marvel Games.

Disney has been partnering with major studios in recent years for its biggest intellectual properties. Marvel has partnered with Insomniac to develop a Wolverine game alongside Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Ubisoft is working on Avatar Frontiers of Pandora while Bethesda’s MachineGames is developing an Indiana Jones game that will be exclusive to Xbox.
