Donald Glover might still have a future as Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars cinematic universe.
Glover revealed his sentiment about playing the fan-favorite character again in a recent GQ interview where he said that he’d “love to play Lando again,” hinting that it has survived the recent exodus of in-development Star Wars films over at Disney.
Unfortunately, Glover’s words are just as vague as anyone else’s, and while he might be interested in doing it for now, who knows what the future might hold?
Perhaps one of the reasons why all parties involved are hesitant to revisit the Skywalker era is its association with the 2018 film, Solo: A Star Wars Story. The film, which reportedly cost at least $300 million to make without factoring in marketing costs, barely made back its production budget with a $393 million box office take.
The truth is anyone’s guess at this point, but at least we have a “confirmation” that Disney didn’t cancel everything.
After going all-in on the Star Wars universe a few years back, Disney is cutting costs and dropping projects, including ones that were supposed to be headed by Kevin Feige and Patty Jenkins. The Lando movie will be one of the projects still in the works.
Other upcoming shows and films include another season of Andor, more of The Mandalorian, and the Ahsoka series. Finally, Disney is bringing the High Republic era into the small screen with The Acolyte although we don’t know exactly when that’s coming out.
If it’s any consolation, the video game side of Star Wars is booming. Early gameplay reviews of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has nothing but praises to sing about the upcoming sequel ahead of its release on April 28. In addition to this, Ubisoft has an open-world Star Wars game in the pipeline, which it plans to monetize. Finally, while it’s still ways away, Star Wars Eclipse is reportedly a narrative-driven game with a deep plot that’s characteristic of a Quantic Dream title.
As for Donald Glover, he’s set to star as the Hypno-Hustler in an upcoming Spider-Man spin-off.
