Greek mythology is getting a fresh start with the reboot of Rick Riordan’s young-adult fantasy series, Percy Jackson & the Olympians, and guess what? Disney+ just dropped a teaser for the upcoming series with the show’s very first poster.
The minimalist poster showcases the Camp Half-Blood banner and an ancient Greek battle helmet. While details of the Disney+ series are scarce, we do know that the first season will cover The Lightning Thief, the first book in the series, and will span eight episodes.
Perseus “Percy” Jackson is one of the more notable characters in Greek mythology fiction. Discovering his true identity as a demigod at the tender age of 12, Percy takes refuge from the monsters and creatures hunting him at Camp Half-Blood, a training ground for demigods nestled in Long Island.
Chris Columbus spearheaded the first film adaptations with Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. These films proved profitable, raking in a combined global box office haul of $430 million. While the initial plan was to adapt the entire series of five novels, subsequent films failed to materialize.
Disney gave us a sneak peek last year at the D23 Expo with a teaser trailer for the show, unveiling the cast and confirming Walker Scobell as the new lead. Fans of the book series who’ve been concerned about the show staying true to the original material can take solace in the knowledge that Riordan himself is part of the project as an executive producer.
In an interview with Comicbook.com, Riordan confidently assured fans that the show would meet their expectations, stating:
Honestly, I think my first reaction was relief. I was like, ‘Oh, thank goodness. I think the fans are going to be pleased.’ That’s all I want.
Filming concluded in February, and the series is now in post-production. No official release date has been announced yet, but Riordan has confirmed that the show will premiere early next year.
