Why Star Wars Outlaws might land later in 2024 than expected

Despite its expansive universe, Star Wars is severely lacking in story-driven and open-world titles, which Star Wars Outlaws should change.

To be fair, FY2025 for Ubisoft still includes the "late 2024" release window that was confirmed by Disney.

Star Wars Outlaws, an upcoming open-world game from Ubisoft, has been confirmed by Disney for a late 2024 release.

This detail was first revealed in a January 2 blog post on the Disney Parks website, as spotted by IGN. While primarily a website focused on upcoming attractions and events for the theme parks, it mentioned the game’s launch timeframe.

Upon reaching out to Disney, IGN learned that Star Wars Outlaws’ release window remains broader than “late 2024”, saying that fans can still expect it come out anytime between today and December 31.

The late 2024 release period for Star Wars Outlaws aligns well with the holiday season, a strategic choice as it allows Disney and Ubisoft to capitalize on the Christmas period. However, there remains a possibility that Ubisoft could delay the game’s release to 2025. In its latest earnings report, Ubisoft mentioned the need to push a “large game” to its 2025 fiscal year, which runs from April 2024 to the end of March 2025. Although not explicitly named, Star Wars Outlaws is pointed to as the biggest candidate for this. Thus, any last-minute setbacks could potentially push its release to 2025 if not even later.

You can criticize Ubisoft's approach all you want, but it's hard to deny that the studio has a formula for open world titles that works, more often than not.

For Star Wars fans, the wait for new video game content has been a challenging one. After seeing the release of one of 2023’s best games, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, other anticipated projects aren’t doing well. Knights of the Old Republic, is as good as dead. On the other hand, Star Wars Eclipse is showing no significant updates and could’ve possibly been delayed out of the current generation of consoles. Finally, Star Wars Hunters still doesn’t have a release date.

If nothing else, Star Wars Outlaws offers a beacon of hope for the Star Wars fans looking to immerse themselves in the franchise more in video game form.

Revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2023, Star Wars Outlaws is being developed as an action-adventure game and will be story-driven. Set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, the game features Kay Vess as the playable protagonist. She works together with a small crew, including the four-legged alien, Nix, and ND-5, a commando droid, as they attempt the biggest heist in history. The game promises immersive gameplay, featuring free space travel with no loading screens between takeoff and entering an atmosphere, dogfights, stealth elements, and speeder traversal.

As Ubisoft focuses on the stealth aspect of Assassin's Creed, it might be using other titles to refine its open world expertise.

Players can explore numerous planets in Star Wars Outlaws, including the iconic Tatooine and Toshara, along with brand new locations. Narrative director Navid Khavari has stated that players can expect cameos from a variety of familiar and known characters, as well as elements that fans haven’t seen before.

Perhaps the best part is that Star Wars Outlaws is a next-gen title that will be available exclusively on Xbox Series S/X, PlayStation 5, and PC.

Despite its open-world nature, Ubisoft has stated that Star Wars Outlaws isn’t an excessively long game, balancing the open-world experience with a manageable playtime.

Given Ubisoft’s track record of successful open-world games – believe or not, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is actually a good game – expectations are high for an engaging and authentic Star Wars adventure.

Regardless of whether it'll be a good game or not, Star Wars Outlaws is shaping up to be a gorgeous next-gen title.

With the release date now out in the open, here’s to hoping that either Disney or Ubisoft graces fans with an official announcement soon.
