Elegance and espionage are gearing up for a dazzling return as preparations for Kingsman 3 begin. Anticipation for the sequel has been high despite the poor reception for 2017’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle, so will the conclusion to Harry and Eggsy’s story live up to expectations?
In a recent special panel interview at New York Comic Con, director Matthew Vaughn shared updates about the projects he’s working on. The director has shared his plans for filming the upcoming movie, which concludes the story of Taron Egerton’s Gary “Eggsy” Unwin aka Galahad. Vaughn also shared updates for the Kick-Ass reboot project he is working on.
“Next year we’re rebooting Kick-Ass and we’re making Kingsman 3,” Vaugh shared. “Kick-Ass sort of changed people’s perception of what a superhero film is at that time. So we’re doing it again. So it’s none of the characters from the other Kick-Ass. We’d like to bring them back after the reboot, but this reboot is just going off on a tangent that I really can’t talk about. But it’s fun.”
Fans have been waiting on Kingman 3 as the ending of The Golden Circle left audiences hanging. Many viewers are excited to see how the story of Eggsy ends in the third film. Vaughn previously said that Kingsman 3 will serve as “the conclusion of the Harry Hart-Eggsy relationship.”
Egerton has expressed his desire to return for a third movie and give a “fitting ending” for the character that sent his career to stardom. The actor has committed to return for the third movie but is still holding out for the right story.
Aside from Egerton, Colin Firth is also reportedly returning for Kingsman 3 and will be reprising his role as Harry Hart. The elder secret agent served as a mentor to Eggsy in the first film, turning the one-time car thief into the best secret agent for the intelligence service.
The first two movies in the Kingsman franchise had mixed reception from critics and fans but were blockbuster hits. The first movie earned $414 million from a modest budget of $94 million. The second movie also turned in a profit, grossing $410 million from an estimated production cost of $104 million.
However, the 2021 prequel movie The King’s Man did not find the same success as the two previous movies. The film grossed just $126 million against a budget of $100 million making it a box-office bomb. The movie put into question the viability of a new Kingsman project given the poor earnings of the prequel and the middling reception of the first two movies.
Despite the long odds, Vaughn is still pushing ahead with his plans for the Eggsy trilogy. The long gap between the second movie and Kingsman 3 may be beneficial for the film. The excitement is there, the only question is whether the sequel can recapture the magic of the first two installments.
