Ubisoft is reportedly working on two upcoming Far Cry projects. The first one is the next mainline entry, while another is a multiplayer spin-off. Ubisoft has not yet formally announced which projects it is working on in the Far Cry universe, leading to a flurry of speculation and anticipation among fans and industry insiders alike.
Concrete details for the upcoming projects are scarce, but new information about the multiplayer spin-off has now emerged. According to Insider Gaming‘s Tom Henderson, the upcoming Far Cry multiplayer will be an extraction-based shooter that will be completely separate from the new mainline title. The new multiplayer game is internally known as Project Maverick and is being developed at Ubisoft Montreal.
The new report suggests that Project Maverick changed scope several times over its development cycle and has now morphed into an extraction-shooter set in the fictional Alaskan setting named Alashnica. The story reportedly revolves around players being lured to the area with the promise of freedom, but will ultimately discover that there is mistrust between the inhabitants of Alashnica, resulting in utter chaos.
As an extraction-based shooter, players will gather resources for survival with gameplay featuring parallel activities like hunting animals for materials to craft gear, finding chemicals for gadgets, harvesting plants for medical supplies, and scavenging for weapon parts and ammo. Similar to DayZ, the game should feature a hideout that serves as the base of operations and a safe space for players. The upcoming title will likely be team-based, with players sharing a common hideout.
Like with most survival shooters, the gameplay loop revolves around getting gear, gaining experience to level up, and acquiring perks. We assume items gathered from previous rounds will remain and carry over to succeeding incursions. The report suggests that perks are directly tied to the leveling system in the game. Like Warzone DMZ, players need to complete contracts in order to purchase or acquire perks.
The Far Cry multiplayer will reportedly feature permadeath which would mean that players lose everything, including gear, weapons, perks, and levels when they die. To prevent losing items, players must keep their loot stored in their hideouts. The high-risk, high-reward element adds a layer of thrill in every round.
According to the report, Ubisoft is targeting to release the game ahead of Far Cry 7 and has a launch window of April 2025. Alpha tests are reportedly scheduled for the first half of 2024. However, Ubisoft is known for internal delays, so take these dates as internal placeholders for now.
It will be interesting to see what Ubisoft comes up with in the upcoming Far Cry multiplayer. This will be the studio’s second multiplayer offering after The Division Heartland which is scheduled to release next year. We will probably hear about the upcoming project in the next few months if Ubisoft sticks to the rumored schedules.
