Death Stranding movie gets a very promising update

Producer Allan Ungar teases "some very exciting news" about the highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the PlayStation exclusive title.

Allan Ungar said he wants to share exciting news about the upcoming project.

The production of Death Stranding is continuing despite the ongoing Hollywood strike. There are reportedly new updates about the movie from its producer.

The live-action adaptation of Death Stranding was announced last December. It’s in development as part of a collaboration between Kojima Productions and Alex Lebovici’s Hammerstone Studios.

Producer Allan Ungar recently spoke to Screen Rant about the status of the Death Stranding movie. Ungar said the movie is very important for Kojima and the film will surprise fans of the critically acclaimed video game.

“This is an incredibly, incredibly important undertaking for [Kojima],” Ungar shared. “This is his baby, this is the first time that he went out on his own as an independent studio, and made a game, and that game became critically acclaimed, it became very prolific. Unfortunately, due to the strike, and due to sort of everything that’s happening in our industry right now, I can’t say as much as I’d like to, other than there’s going to be some very exciting news coming up soon, and we’re incredibly excited about the direction that we’re taking it in.”

He adds, “I think it’s going to be an incredible surprise, not just for video game fans, but for moviegoing fans, and audiences in general, who I don’t think have seen anything quite like this before. [Kojima is involved] every step of the way”

Ungar shared that he cannot reveal details for the movie because of the ongoing strike.

Death Stranding follows the story of Sam Porter Bridges as he navigates through the post-apocalyptic United States after a mysterious event caused the “Beached Things” (BT) to roam the Earth. The BTs caused a mass extinction event and the collapse of society.

Sam works as a courier, delivering supplies and other essentials to communities via the Chiral Network. All throughout his adventures in the world, Sam discovers more about the mysterious event, the Death Stranding.

Kojima recently revealed that studios have approached him to give the live-action adaptation the blockbuster treatment but he turned down the offers because he never intended to make the upcoming project into a large-scale production.

Death Stranding is an “incredibly important undertaking” for Kojima.

“Making money isn’t something I’m focused on at all, either,” Kojima shared. “I’m aiming for a more arthouse approach, and the only person who offered to make a film like that was Alex Lebovici [Hammerstone Studios CEO], which makes me think he’s a rather unusual type.”

Death Stranding does not have a release date as of writing. Many expected Kojima to reveal more information about the project this year. However, it looks like the game director will have to wait until the conclusion of the strike before sharing details about the movie.
