Cities: Skyline 2 is five time bigger than the original

The map size is bigger than some real-life countries.

The map for the sequel will be as big as Liechtenstein.

Colossal Order is sharing more information about Cities: Skyline 2 as we get closer to launch. In the studio’s latest video for the upcoming title, the devs revealed just how massive the new game is – and if you thought its predecessor was large, get ready to be amazed.

The latest video for Cities: Skylines 2 is titled Maps & Themes and focuses on where players can build their metropolis. Comparing the size of the playable area, the sequel will be five times larger than the original game.

“In Cities: Skylines the playable area consists of 5×5 tiles, 9 of which can be purchased once everything is unlocked,” Colossal Order said in its dev diaries video. “One map tile is 1.92 x 1.92 km which results in the total playable area being 92.16km² with a maximum of 33.18km² to build a city on.”

The devs add, “For starters, one map tile is much smaller—roughly 1/3 what it is in the predecessor—but you are able to unlock almost all tiles giving you a whopping total of 441 map tiles. That results in a playable area of 159km² which is roughly 5 times bigger than in Cities: Skylines.”

The playable area is comparable to Liechtenstein in Europe which is 160 square kilometres. However, mods for the original game allowed for a massive 299 square kilometer playable area. The map in Cities: Skylines 2 is just around half of the map in the original game with mods.

That said, the possibility that modders will make the map in the sequel even bigger is pretty high. One very important new change in the sequel is that it no longer has an agent limit, which means that there are fewer artificial boundaries to your city’s growth.

One other interesting addition to Cities: Skyline 2 is that unlockable tiles do not need to be adjacent to each other. It may open up possibilities for islands and remote settlements. The developers are unlocking new ways for players to let their creativity flourish.

The playable area for Cities: Skyline 2 is just under 160 square kilometers.

“Additionally, the Map Tiles do not have to be connected to each other, so technically you can create small isolated pocket towns, and you can purchase the Map Tiles all the way to the edge of the map where you can create new Outside Connections. But wait, there’s more! The map height limit is much higher than before adding much more flexibility and freedom in how your dream city will look.”

Cities: Skylines 2 is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and Microsoft Windows on October 24, 2023.
