Chris Evans had a great ending to his time as Captain America in Avengers: Endgame. However, since giving up the shield, fans have been asking for him to come back as the Star Spangled Man with a Plan. It seems that fans will have to wait a bit longer for Evans to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Speaking at the C2E2 fan convention in Chicago, the actor shared that his return as Captain America “doesn’t quite feel right” yet. Evans explains that he does not want to mess with the story by returning. However, he did say that there are more stories to tell for Captain America.
“It’s tough, because look, I love that role deeply,” Evans said. “He means so much to me, and I really do. I think there’s more Steve Rogers stories tell, sure. But at the same time, I’m very, very precious with it… it’s like this little shiny thing that I have that I love so much, and I just don’t want to mess up in any way, and I was a part of something that was so special for a special period of time and in a way, it really landed so well.”
He adds, “As much as I’m connected to that role and love telling those stories and working with those people, it doesn’t quite feel right now.” Evans navigated the answer without tipping over either edge, leaving the possibility of a return open without hinting anything.
Steve Rogers passed down his shield to Sam Wilson during the funeral scene for Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame. Wilson has since taken up the mantle of Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier TV series on Disney+. In turn, Wilson gave his Falcon wingsuit to Joaquin Torres in the season finale of the show.
Actor Anthony Mackie and Danny Ramirez will reprise their roles as Captain America and Falcon respectively in Captain America: New World Order. It will be Mackie’s first full-length feature as Captain America while Ramirez will be making his MCU movie debut in the upcoming film.
Evans spent eight years as Captain America in the MCU. Before landing the role, he appeared as Johnny Storm aka Human Torch in two Fantastic Four movies. He was replaced by Michael B. Jordan in the Fantastic Four reboot. There have been talks of Evans reprising his role as Human Torch in the upcoming Fantastic Four movie.
“The more you make those movies, the more research you do prior to the film, the more you realize you become a fan… you start to see these amazing characters and great stories,” Evans said about his experience making superhero movies for over a decade. “You have all these creative people coming together, trying to operate on the same intangible idea.”
He continues, “Comics give everyone a common ground to kind of say, ‘We’ve all seen this. We all know how we felt when we read it, when we saw it,'” Evans added. “And that’s the starting point. And that’s really, it’s an incredible help when you make it a film, not to mention the incredible built-in fan base.”
Captain America: New World Order will hit theatres on the 3rd of May, 2024.
