CD Projekt RED is working on a live-action adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077

If there's one thing that Cyberpunk has proven, the story doesn't always have to revolve around V, Johnny Silverhand, or even Solomon Reed.

The denizens of Night City better prepare themselves to take yet another thrilling drive into the neon-clad streets of the autonomous corporation-run city. CD Projekt RED has partnered with Anonymous Content for a “live-action project” set in the Cyberpunk universe.

Now, before your minds wander too far, let’s set some expectations first. The adaptation is still in its infancy. The media powerhouse responsible for True Detective and The Revenant is likely still looking for the perfect screenwriter to adapt and translate a narrative-driven game like Cyberpunk 2077 into live-action form. But, while the screenwriter’s seat, among others, remains vacant, the project’s journey is still worth a glance.

After all, with Cyberpunk 2077’s massive success – evidenced by selling a staggering 25 million copies and getting quite a well-received expansion, Phantom Liberty – a screen adaptation seems like the a massive leap of faith but one that may find CDPR landing in a bushel filled with cash.

The Cyberpunk universe is so expansive that it could spawn an entire multimedia universe if done right.

If we were to speculate, it’s highly likely that the live-action show isn’t a mere repetition of V’s journey or a rehashing of Johnny’s rebellious streak. Instead, we’re likely gearing up for a fresh narrative, nestled comfortably in the vast expanses of Night City or perhaps its shadowy outskirts. After all, CD Projekt Red has previously expanded its horizons, giving us delightful narratives like the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime on Netflix. And if we’re tossing speculations around like confetti, let’s also ponder the medium – TV series or a cinematic experience? Given the current trends and Anonymous Content’s illustrious record, a TV series seems like a safe bet. Not to mention, the existing camaraderie between CD Projekt Red and Netflix, which gives us another clue.

This massive collaboration requires great minds. To that end, Anonymous Content Studios’ Head of Television, Garret Kemble, along with key members like Ryan Schwartz and the ever-talented David Levine (who once steered the ship for HBO’s iconic shows like True Detective and Westworld), are at the helm. Levine’s touch is particularly intriguing. His track record has those of us in the know subtly nodding our heads, anticipating another masterpiece.

The venture raises some tantalizing possibilities. Given the vast ensemble in Night City, could we perhaps see crossover characters? Or even a narrative pivot focusing on favorites like Judy or Panam? Of course, these are just musings, but isn’t that the fun of it?

Fans are still holding out hope that a second season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is coming out.

Although video game adaptations have notoriously walked a tightrope, the industry has recently shown finesse in that delicate balance. Aside from the examples we’ve already mentioned, films and TV series like the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, HBO’s live-action adaptation of The Last of Us, and, yes, even the Uncharted film, showcase this evolving expertise.

If nothing else, recent history suggests that it’s perfectly acceptable to set high expectations for what can potentially be the only Cyberpunk media we’ll get this decade.

Despite the thrilling news, it’s essential to acknowledge the rocky road Cyberpunk 2077 went through when it came out. The early bugs aside, thanks to relentless updates and heartwarming collaborations such as the Edgerunners anime, its redemption arc has been nothing short of cinematic. Now, with its reputation restored, a transition to a different kind of medium is both timely and promising. And for those still playing the game, remember, even if the story seemingly concludes on a poignant note, the upcoming live-action might offer another immersive dive into the world of Cyberpunk.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty should only sell better over time, similar to what happened with The Witcher 3 and its expansions.

For now though, fans can enjoy the release of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. If you’re still not sold on the game yet, you can wait for the release of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition.
