Capcom Joins Horror Game Frenzy with Possible Resident Evil 9 Tease

Koshi Nakanishi, director of Resident Evil 7, is taking the helm for Resident Evil 9, which will be released amidst a horror game genre boom.

Jill Valentine and Leon Kennedy are expected to play central roles in Resident Evil 9.

Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 is one of the best horror games of all time. It’s just as good if not better than the original, improving on every aspect, surprising much of the video game industry. After all, it wasn’t so long ago when Bloober Team’s very public disagreement with Konami went viral. Now, it’s believed Konami has signed Bloober Team to remake more Silent Hill games.

With a sequel to Alien Isolation confirmed and the remake of Until Dawn making waves for all the wrong reasons, everyone’s talking about horror games more than ever, and it appears Capcom couldn’t let this stand without joining in on the fun.

Whether it’s by design or not, an errant Resident Evil 9 page has appeared on the video games review aggregate website, Metacritic, over the weekend, hinting at an imminent reveal.

Resident Evil 9 will have to address the cliffhanger ending of Resident Evil 8.

Of course, an official Metacritic page doesn’t always guarantee an announcement. However, this isn’t the first time Capcom has done something similar. If we go by the company’s previous history, we could hear more about Resident Evil 9 over the next few months, perhaps before the year ends at The Game Awards.

2024 marks the first time that Capcom hasn’t released a new Resident Evil game. After the success of Resident Evil 7 in 2017, with a Nintendo Switch port coming in 2018, Capcom has alternated between a new entry or remake every year since. The two most recent outings, Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4 Remake won awards and were huge commercial hits.

The expectation is for Resident Evil 9 to continue this string of successful games, but the bar is undoubtedly higher now that it has legitimate competition.

Between the Alien Isolation sequel and the next Silent Hill remake, horror game fans are spoilt for choice when it comes to alternative AAA horror experiences to Resident Evil, which is great. The horror genre went through a lull period for most of the past decade. Although everyone’s blood pressure won’t be better for this, more and better horror titles are always great.

For what it’s worth, the next Resident Evil entry should be more than up for the task. The game will be directed by Koshi Nakanishi.

The long-time Capcom developer was the director of Resident Evil 7, which many consider as one of the best games in the franchise and arguably what kickstarted the series’ recent renaissance.

With Alan Wake 2 winning awards last year and the Silent Hill 2 Remake expected to receive a similarly warm welcome during the awards season, horror game fans have been eating good lately.
