Cameron Monaghan confirms Star Wars Jedi 3 is in the works

The initial pair of Star Wars Jedi games was well received by critics and audiences alike, making a third installment a foregone conclusion.

The Star Wars Universe is one of the biggest franchises on the planet, spawning several films, comics, novels, and video games. If we believe Cameron Monaghan, the franchise is about to get even bigger.

Monaghan plays the protagonist Cal Kestis in the Star Wars video game series titled Star Wars Jedi. That series recently saw the release of the second installment but Monaghan has now revealed that a third installment is potentially on the way.

Monaghan revealed this detail during a recent appearance on a panel at the Ocala Comic-Con in Florida earlier this month.

He said, “We’re working on the third [game] and we’re in the process of doing it right now… So, that’s a big undertaking and there’s been some conversations so far. But hopefully, when all things are said and done, we’ll be able to go in and make something really cool for you guys again.”

Earlier in the year, Stig Asmussen, who directed the two existing titles, told IGN of his wish to make the series into a trilogy. He also said that the third title, when it does happen, will be built with Unreal Engine 5, instead of Unreal Engine 4 which was used for the two previous games.

Given this tidbit, we are inclined to believe Monaghan’s claim even though Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment have not announced a third installment.

A third installment of the Star Wars Jedi series hasn’t been officially announced.

For fans of the action-adventure video game series, news of another installment is undoubtedly welcome as it means our journey with the Star Wars avatar is not over just yet. We should mention that, even though we believe Monaghan’s words on this issue, we don’t think it’s final. For that, we believe it’s best to wait for an official announcement from the studios involved in its development.

The events of the Star Wars Jedi video game series take place after that of the film Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. The series follows a young Jedi, Kestis, as he makes his way across the galaxy with a target on his back. The Jedi Padawan must find ways to evade the Imperial Inquisitors after him and, at the same time, complete his Jedi training. He must also try to rebuild the already fallen Jedi Order and make peace with his past.

By the way, Asmussen’s time as the director of the video game series has come to an end. This news came a day before Monaghan unveiled that Star Wars Jedi 3 is in production. EA announced the veteran director’s exit via an official spokesperson who said he left to “pursue other adventures, and we wish him the best of luck.”

Asmussen’s exit will no doubt impact the future of the series but we hope the studio has enough talent to make up for the wealth of experience he has taken with him. If they do press on with Star Wars Jedi 3, we have an unshakeable belief in their ability to deliver something fun and exciting. What we doubt is whether it will be on the same scale as when Asmussen led the effort.

In the meantime, fans of the Star Wars Universe can keep themselves busy with the first two installments of the series, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Both titles are available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S.

Aside from these platforms, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is also available on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
