As an alignment of one of the most popular video game franchises of all time and the zeitgeist genre, Call of Duty: Warzone was bound to be a huge success. With tens of millions of active players - for better or worse - there are a lot of fans wondering what will happen to their battle royale game of choice when the next-gen rolls around - and now we know.

While the ongoing COVID-19 crisis has effectively delayed the entire next console generation, it's still practically right around the corner. We now know almost everything there is to know about the Xbox Series X, and while Sony is being cagier about the PlayStation 5, that will soon change over the course of the summer. The new consoles are due late 2020 or early 2021, depending on how the situation develops.

Neither Infinity Ward nor Activision have publicly addressed the future of their current titles with regards to the upcoming consoles, but thanks to a recent interview by GamerGen, Narrative Director Taylore Kurosaki did answer questions regarding the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5.

The interviewer, prefacing their question with the likelihood that Kurosaki may not be able to answer, directly asked whether an entirely new version of Warzone is planned for the upcoming platforms, or if the current one will be supported. Luckily, the answer wasn't particularly evasive. I know that our plan is Warzone is going to be around for quite some time, so as soon as those new systems are out and available I'm sure we'll support them. That's about as clear as port announcements from developers go, though to be fair it isn't exactly a huge surprise. Microsoft has already made it clear how important backwards compatibility is to them, so we knew that in some form or other, Warzone would inevitably be hitting the Series X. Official support, however, means it will make the best use of the hardware too.
