Gunther is fresh off a win against Sheamus and Drew McIntyre in a triple-threat match at WrestleMania 39. The win helped extend his reign as the longest-reigning Intercontinental champion, which is now approaching 300 days. But, if we believe the rumors about who his next big opponent is going to be, Gunther will see his reign go longer than 400 days before he’ll face off against someone who knows a thing or two about snapping streaks.
According to WRKD WRestling, Triple H is thinking about booking Gunther against Lesnar in the summer, a feud that could culminate at either Money in the Bank in July or SummerSlam in August.
We’re betting on the latter because the WWE will want to distance the expected grudge match between Cody Rhodes and Lesnar at Backlash next month as far away from the next opponent of The Beast Incarnate as possible.
It’s worth noting that WrestlingNews.co reported on this in December. At the time, it was believed that Triple H wanted to have Lesnar fight Gunther at WrestleMania 39. Unfortunately, this didn’t happen. Instead, we saw Lesnar squash Omos at the Showcase of the Immortals, which apparently led to his attack on Cody Rhodes at RAW After WrestleMania. But, we did get a staredown between the defending WWE Intercontinental Champion and Lesnar at this year’s Royal Rumble, so that’s something.
Lesnar’s proven at this point that he’ll fight against anyone and anything. Since he’s not eligible to challenge Roman Reigns after losing at WrestleMania 38, Lesnar has an in-story reason to go after everyone else.
After Rhodes, Gunther could be next in Lesnar’s sights.
